Inside Line Promotions – LAKE STEVENS, Wash. (Oct. 27, 2015) – Austen Wheatley ran a shortened schedule in 2015.

“My dad had a busy year with work and my business continued to expand in 2015 so racing was secondary,” he said. “We didn’t get to compete as often as we’d like, but we had some good runs and some things we can build on for next year.”

Wheatley scored a trio of top-10 finishes, but it was a seventh-place result with the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series at Nodak Speedway in Minot, N.D., in August that stands out.

“We put together a complete night from qualifying seventh, finishing second in a heat race and moving forward in the main event,” he said. “Any time you run in the top 10 with the World of Outlaws it’s a great night. We actually ran out of fuel on the final restart, too. Otherwise I think we could have earned our first top five with the series.”

That performance highlighted a strong performance in the late summer for Wheatley, who recorded his career-best finish during the Knoxville Nationals and narrowly missed top 10s with the Outlaws at Junction Motor Speedway in McCool Junction, Neb., at Skagit Speedway in Alger, Wash., and at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Wash.

Wheatley also ended his season by qualifying third quickest in his group during the Gold Cup Race of Champions opener at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, Calif.

“We missed a top 10 several times this year with the World of Outlaws, but I felt like we were as consistent with the Outlaws as we’ve ever been,” he said. “That will give me a lot of confidence when we compete with the series next year.”

Wheatley said no plan is in place for next year’s schedule, but he will likely begin the 2016 slate in March with the World of Outlaws in Las Vegas.

“I want to thank my dad and sponsors for the support,” he said. “I’m already looking forward to next season and improving on our results from this year.”
