Inside Line Promotions – DODGE CITY, Kan. (Oct. 1, 2015) – Zach Blurton secured the United Rebel Sprint Series Kansas Region championship with a runner-up result last Saturday at Dodge City Raceway Park.
The podium finish also earned Blurton a second-place finish in the URSS National championship standings by only 14 points.
“One of our goals this year was to win the URSS Kansas Region so that was big for our team,” he said. “We would have liked to pick up the URSS National championship as well, but we were as close to winning it as we’ve ever been so that was a step forward.”
Last Saturday’s event began with Blurton charging from sixth to third place in a heat race.
“I was up to second on the first lap and they had a yellow so we had to go back,” he said. “I didn’t get as good of a start the second time, but we got up to third.”
That lined Blurton up on the outside of the fourth row for the main event.
“They went out and reworked the track before the A Main,” he said. “It was real slick around the bottom. I got going really good on the top and got up to sixth right away. I passed a couple more cars and settled into fourth until about 10 laps to go. I had to go around a lapped car on the bottom and found some rubber. I really got hooked up and reeled in two more cars to get into second. I was within three or four car lengths of the leader when I got stuck behind a lapped car that was running in the rubber. It was hard to get around him. I felt like I was the fastest car, but I couldn’t get to the leader.”
Blurton’s second-place finish was his 15th top five of the season.
“I thought it was a really good finish,” he said. “I felt like we struggled at Dodge City not getting as good of finishes this year. Me and my dad tried to throw everything we had at it for the final night and it seemed to work. I’m really happy with our outcome.”
