Kevin Thomas Jr. of Cullman, Ala. and Dave Darland of Lincoln, Ind. are set to battle for the 2015 Mike Curb USAC Super License championship as the season enters its final two months.
Saturday’s “4-Crown Nationals” offers a “triple” opportunity for drivers hoping to claim the $5,000 cash prize offered by the Nashville, Tenn. sponsor. The driver earning the most total USAC points in the three National racing series (Silver Crown, AMSOIL Sprint and Honda Midget) collects the cash at the annual USAC National Awards Banquet in December.
Thomas, who has scored a pair of Midget wins and a Sprint win so far this year, has 10 “podium” finishes among his 30 “top-10s.” Darland has four Sprint wins among his 11 “podiums” and 33 “top-10s.”
Tracy Hines, the “Super License” champion the last two years, ranks third in the current points, ahead of Chase Stockon and Robert Ballou.
Races remaining on the USAC National calendar after Eldora Saturday are: Silver Crown (10/10 at Syracuse, NY), Sprint (10/3 at Lawrenceburg, IN, Nov. 12-14 at Perris, CA and Nov. 19-21 at Tucson, AZ), and Midget (10/23 at Wayne City, IL and 11/26 at Perris, CA).
Former winners of the USAC Super License are: Tracy Hines (2000, 2008, and 2013-14), Jerry Coons Jr. (2007), Josh Wise (2005-06), Jay Drake (2004), J.J. Yeley (2001-02-03) and Dave Darland (1999).
