Long-time Marion County Fairboard member and past president Grant Rankin of Bussey will join friend and former sprint car racer Curt Houge of Ames in tonight’s “Sprint Car 101” forum at the National Sprint Car Museum. Six-time Knoxville Raceway champion Randy Smith of Mount Ayr has had to postpone his appearance due to family commitments. The forum, which is free, open to the public and will be moderated by Knoxville historian Eric Arnold, will start at 7 p.m. tonight on the museum’s second floor.
Museum curator Tom Schmeh said today, “I can’t thank Grant enough for agreeing to be on tonight’s panel on such short notice. Grant brings a wealth of knowledge about the Marion County Fair Association, the Knoxville Raceway, and even the World of Outlaws to tonight’s Sprint Car 101. He was a regular attendee, representing Knoxville, at the late Ted Johnson’s World of Outlaws promoters’ meetings and he has traveled to many, many other sprint car tracks in this country, border to border and coast to coast. The fact that both Grant and Curt are friends will only make tonight’s forum that much more fun.”
Those seeking more information on the non-profit museum’s Third Thursday series of “Sprint Car 101” forums should visit www.sprintcarhof.com. It is hoped that Randy Smith’s appearance can be rescheduled in the future.
