September 16, 2015 – For Wayne Johnson, finishing sixth at the dirt track at Texas Motor Speedway was subpar. Missing a great comeback by his favorite team, the Dallas Cowboys, may have been just as bad…but he did beat most of the traffic out of the parking lot. This weekend, Wayne returns to the I-80 Speedway Fall Brawl near Greenwood, Nebraska. Last year at the race, he picked up over $60,000 at the event. Though the stakes are a bit lower this year, he hopes to finish in the same spot.
Things did start well Saturday at TMS. Wayne won his heat after starting third. “We went really well in the heat,” he says. “We were able to get out front and cruise. Unfortunately, I went to work on the car for the feature.”
He would redraw a starting spot in the main event outside of row three. “We’ve been a little loose lately, so I tightened it up,” says Wayne. “I tightened it up enough that I couldn’t go forward. Once the rubber got laid down in the track we were super-tight. I couldn’t go anywhere.”
It resulted in a sixth place finish for Wayne. “It was just an overcompensation on my part,” he says. “We were really lucky to finish sixth. We were as bad as we’ve been all year really with the car.”
The team will go with some familiarity at I-80. “We haven’t been really consistent lately,” says Wayne. “This weekend, we’re actually going to take the car we won this race with last year and see how we do.”
The bonus for sweeping this weekend’s features in $20,000, a bit down from last year’s $50,000. “Obviously, it was our biggest win,” says Wayne. “As a team, I can’t tell you how much that meant for us. We had a really rough season up until then. We’re hoping for the best again this weekend.”
In attendance at Sunday night’s game at Texas Stadium between the Cowboys and New York Giants, Wayne joined thousands of fans in hitting the exits when the Giants got a turnover and scored to go up ten points with eight minutes left. Of course, the Cowboys came back and won. “By the time we had gotten to the car, they (Cowboys) had scored again,” says Wayne. “We missed a good game there at the end. It was kind of the story of the weekend.”
