Brady Bacon – Looking to Repeat at 4-Crown!
(Bill W) September 22, 2015 – Brady Bacon and the Hoffman Racing #69 team are looking to repeat their 2014 sprint car victory at the 4-Crown Nationals at Eldora Speedway near Rossburg, Ohio this Saturday. The Broken Arrow, Oklahoma driver is coming off a weekend where he came from the tail to finish ninth at the USAC “Tony Hulman/Jim Hurtubise Classic” at the Terre Haute Action Track in Indiana on Friday. The team also finished fourth Saturday in a MSCS/USAC showdown at Tri-State Speedway near Haubstadt, Indiana.
Brady registered the second quick time of the night at Terre Haute Friday. “I thought we had quick time for sure,” he says. “I think we missed it by three-thousandths of a second. It was a good qualifying run. It put us back on track there after we were off during Sprintweek. We went back to what we knew and it was better.”
Unfortunately, the heat did not go as well, and a sixth place finish sent Brady to the B. “We were aggressive for the heat race,” he says. “We detuned the motor a bit. It was getting pretty slick. They went out and watered the track right before the heat races. The track came back in and we didn’t quite have enough to make moves in the heat race. There were three heats, and that stacked those too.”
Winning from the pole in the B set him up inside row four for the feature. “We got things straightened out and won the B,” says Brady. “We had a little battle with Chase (Stockon) there. We had a really good car for the feature. We were moving forward. We had a red and we had a flat right rear. Something in the track cut it.”
In the closing stages, Brady would climb back into the top ten. “We went to the tail and we were able to come back and finish ninth,” he says. “It was tough to pass late in the feature at Terre Haute. It was kind of the way the year’s gone. We have a good run going, and stuff like that has been happening.”
The MSCS passing points format was used at the ¼-mile near Haubstadt Saturday. Brady drew the pole for his heat and won it. “That didn’t give us enough points to get in the redraw for the feature,” he says. “We started seventh. We were just a little too tight in the feature. The car wanted to go, but we were just too tight. We couldn’t use the throttle. It got better as the race went on, but it was a little too late at the end.”
Nonetheless, he would move up to a fourth place finish. “It was encouraging to know what the issue was there,” says Brady. “The last time we were there, we left scratching our heads. We looked back at some things, and we were good. We were just a tick off. If we would have had a couple little things different, I think we would have had a shot at the win.”
Brady will be running in three of the four divisions this weekend at Eldora. “We’re planning on a busy weekend again,” he says. “We’re going to run with the Outlaws on Friday (his #99), and the sprint car and Silver Crown (Paul Martens #48) on Saturday.”
