Inside Line Promotions – HANFORD, Calif. (Sept. 21, 2015) – Dominic Scelzi returned to the Winner’s Circle last Saturday during the King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series event at Keller Auto Speedway.

The win was Scelzi’s second of the season and his third career with the series. It was also his first victory since returning to action the previous weekend following a back injury sustained during the summer.

“We had an extremely fast race car all night long,” he said. “Having to miss time sure makes you appreciate the opportunities and we took advantage of ours on Saturday.”

Scelzi qualified ninth quickest, which lined him up on the outside of the front row for a heat race. Scelzi led every lap during the heat to lock himself into the dash, which he also won with a last-lap pass to garner the pole position for the main event.

“We drew the No. 1 pill in the dash draw and we were able to get the jump early,” he said. “I got passed by Craig Stidham for the lead with about two laps to go, but I was able to get by him on the last lap. The bottom was definitely the place to start so that was a critical pass.”

Scelzi took command after approximately a half-dozen attempts to start the main event.

“We ended up having a fuel stop on Lap 7,” he said. “We had made 60 laps total by the seventh green flag lap. The motor was taking off really well and I was able to get my left rear in the moisture. The guys on the outside were in the slick. I used that to my advantage. I ran the bottom in turns one and two the entire race and I could get a great drive off turn two. We ran the very top in turns three and four with a big cushion. We were able to navigate the track really well.”

Scelzi stayed out front the entire race and he caught a break following a scary discover during the fuel stop.

“We realized there was a hole in the rear end,” he said. “We basically raced the rest of the race with no oil in the rear end. It was glowing red at the end of the feature. It really is a testament to Red Line Oil how amazing their product is to have no oil in the rear end and for it to keep everything lubricated enough to not seize up.”

The win capped a weekend that began on Friday at Keller Auto Speedway with 360ci competition.

“We struggled all night finding the right gear to run,” he said. “We kept missing all night and we struggled getting the motor where we wanted it. As the race track changed throughout the night it seemed like we missed more and more.”

Scelzi qualified 14th quickest, placed fourth in a heat race and he charged from 14th to seventh place in the main event.

“We did all our passing on restarts and got up to fifth at one point,” he said. “The car handled really well, we just couldn’t get the motor to turn RPMs how we wanted. We just didn’t have the miles per hour.”

Scelzi is scheduled to compete this Friday at Santa Maria Raceway in Santa Maria, Calif., and Saturday at Ventura Raceway in Ventura, Calif., with the King of the West.
