Inside Line Promotions – ADA, Okla. (Sept. 15, 2015) – Cody Wampler registered his 10th top 10 of the season last Saturday during his season debut at Oklahoma Sports Park.
“I hadn’t been there in about 15 years,” he said. “I actually won a feature there when I started sprint car racing a long time ago.”
Wampler kicked off the Oil Capital Racing Series event by finishing where he started – second – in a heat race.
“Nothing really happened in the heat,” he said. “That track is pretty big compared to everything else we run on. It’s a real sandy surface, so that’s different as well. Everybody got in line and it was hammer down.”
That was good enough to earn Wampler a spot in the feature redraw, where he pulled the No. 2 during the random draw to line up on the outside of the front row for the 25-lap main event.
“I talked to some locals about that track and they all said it was going to be locked down rubber,” he said. “I didn’t tighten the car up preparing for rubber. It started taking some coming out of the corners, but not getting in and through the middle. It wasn’t too big of an issue though.”
Wampler maintained third place throughout most of the feature before a late-race caution.
“We were in third on Lap 1 and we stayed there until about Lap 18,” he said. “I felt like we were getting better. We had a caution and it was a different car on that restart. I don’t know if the tires sealed over or what, but after that I couldn’t stay low in the corner to exit in the rubber where I needed to be. I just fell back. It was a pretty disappointing last few laps.”
Wampler ended with a seventh-place result.
He is scheduled to return to action Oct. 2-3 at Lawton Speedway in Lawton, Okla., for the Winter Nationals.
