Gastineau Wins 9th Annual Oklahoma State Championship Race at Oklahoma Sports Park

Ada, Okla. (September 12, 2015) - On July 25 Whit Gastineau brought a year long winless streak to an end with a victory at Oklahoma Sports Park. Saturday Gastineau picked up where he left off winning the AmeriFlex Hose and Accessories / OCRS Oklahoma State Championship main event presented by Dooling Machine.
Gastineau made the win look easy leading all 25 laps on the way to his fifth victory of the season. But the win was anything but easy.
“It may have looked like it, but I did not feel like it was,” Gastineau said. “The car was great the first 10 or 15 laps. I could flat foot it around there. As I was going through lapped traffic people were going to the bottom and throwing junk up on the track and it made it really slick. I started taking it easy.”
Driving off the pole into the early lead, Gastineau was chased by Cameron Hagin and Cody Wampler for the first three laps. Robert Sellers got around Wampler for third on lap four then passed Hagin for second on lap six, but the 2015 AmeriFlex / OCRS champion could not catch Gastineau.
“It is hard enough to win these races,” Gastineau said. “The main thing it not to lose it for yourself. Just take your time and be smooth.
That was key for Gastineau the final seven laps. Following a lap 18 restart the Moore Oklahoma native decided it was time to change his line around the Oklahoma Sports Park oval.
“When the caution came out I knew the rubber was coming in a little bit so I started easing around the bottom and taking my time,” he said.
“There is a fine line on this track. You are right on the edge. You can drive it hard but not too hard or you will spin out or go off the track.”
The move proved to be a good one and Gastineau picked up an extra $1,000 that was added to the winners purse by Joe Dooling of Dooling Machine.
Danny Smith passed Wampler on lap 19 to finish third followed by former OCRS champion Mike Goodman in fourth. Gary Owens finished in the fifth position moving into the spot just three laps from the finish.
