Inside Line Promotions – ORRVILLE, Ohio (Sept. 8, 2015) – Caleb Helms recorded his season-best finish at Wayne County Speedway on Sunday to cap his weekend with the UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions.
The ninth-place result marked his seventh top 10 of the season and provided a boost of momentum after Helms had taken a month off from racing.
“It was a good weekend all together,” he said. “I could tell it’d been a month since I raced when I was at Attica on Saturday.”
Helms kicked off the weekend on Saturday at Attica Raceway Park in Attica, Ohio, where he qualified 19th quickest – ninth in his group. He then finished where he started – ninth – in a heat race, which relegated him to the B Main.
“We didn’t qualify that good or run well in the heat,” he said. “We made some decent laps in the B Main. Then we struggled a bit in the A Main, but started making good laps in the feature once the track took rubber.”
Helms, who powered from sixth to third place in the consolation race to pick up a transfer to the feature, battled inside the top 20 for most of the main event before finishing 20th.
The weekend wrapped up on Sunday with Helms timing in 10th quickest – third in his group – during qualifying at Wayne County Speedway.
“I actually blew a power steering line and couldn’t make a good lap on the second lap, which is when most people were laying down their best times,” he said. “I had to slow down because I couldn’t see, but our first lap was good enough. Then we had a good start in the heat race and hung on to win that.”
The heat race win locked Helms into the dash, where he finished seventh after starting on the inside of the third row. That lined him up seventh for the main event.
“I was probably too tight, but had a good car in the feature,” he said. “I needed to get up top to run my car. Once we did we had some good lap times. It was a good step forward. I thought we ran strong, but I know we can get a lot better.”
Helms, who competed in the top 10 throughout the main event, ended with a ninth-place result.
