Inside Line Promotions – Highlands, Texas (Sept. 8, 2015) – Channin Tankersley closed the ASCS Gulf South region season with a podium finish last Saturday at Battleground Speedway.

The third-place result at the 14th annual Gulf South Championship Weekend led to a third-place finish in the championship standings, which marked his third straight season with a top three in the standings.

“We had a good run where we put ourselves in position to win the championship, but we had a few things that took us out,” he said. “DNFs pretty much did us in this year. You have to finish every race and be in position every race. We had a horrible start to the year so to finish the way we did I’m pretty happy with that.”

Tankersley kicked off the two-day finale on Friday by advancing from fourth to third place in a heat race. That lined him up on the outside of the sixth row for the main event.

“The track was in pretty bad shape,” he said. “It was about rubber down in heat races. They went out there and put some water on it before the B Main. It had an ok cushion and it helped the bottom and middle enough where it didn’t rubber down as much. In the main event we had a driver error about halfway through. We were passing for fourth. I got in there and a car kind of parked it around the bottom. I couldn’t get it slowed down in time. I barely bumped it and spun out. I had to go to the back and came back to get up to eighth.”

Tankersley rebounded from the mid-race miscue to maneuver from the rear of the field to post an eighth-place result.

He continued to move forward on Saturday, starting with a rally from sixth to second place in a heat race. That started him seventh in the main event.

“Right off the get-go we were really tight and fell back to about 11th,” he said. “I was too tight to run around the bottom, which was primarily where the track was at. We had a caution about Lap 3 and after that I moved up around the top. There wasn’t a cushion, but it was cleaned off up there. I started rolling forward pretty good. It went about 15-to-20 laps green and then we had a red with a few laps to go. I was running third, but there were six cars in front of me and most were lapped cars. I got going on the restart and got up to second with one or two laps to go, but me and second place started racing and we wound up third. That was a pretty good recovery from how the A Main started.”

Tankersley’s third-place finish was his 11th top five of the season. It was his seventh in ASCS Gulf South competition, which ranked third with the series.

He is slated to take the next month off from racing before resuming action Oct. 16-17 at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, for the Winter Nationals with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.
