Inside Line Promotions – Highlands, Texas (Sept. 1, 2015) – Channin Tankersley heads into the 14th annual Gulf South Championship Weekend seeking one thing: wins.
“I wish I was in a little better position in the points,” he said. “I want to get another win before the season is over so that’s our focus. If the point situation works out that’s great, but if not we gave it a good run.”
Tankersley enters the ASCS Gulf South Region doubleheader on Friday and Saturday at Battleground Speedway ranked third in the championship standings – 47 points out of the lead.
“There’s no pressure on me,” he said. “I’ve got nothing to lose. Fourth place isn’t going to get me. If I pop off two great nights and the drivers in front of me in the standings have average nights there’s no telling. You can make 50 points up in a night.”
Tankersley, who claimed his first career ASCS Gulf South Region championship last year, is coming off two sour nights with the series. That dropped him from two points out of the lead to nearly four dozen back heading into the final weekend.
“You just never know,” he said. “It’s weird how things work out sometimes. I’m going to go out swinging. I’m not worried about the points. I’m more concerned about getting a ‘W’ than anything. If you win races the points will come.”
Tankersley was involved in a crash during his first two races at Battleground Speedway this season before he placed second in his most recent event at the track, which is located less than a mile from his shop.
“Aside from having a few uh-ohs this year we’ve been a top-three car every night,” he said. “We’ve had good speed there, but got in a couple of bad situations that hurt us. Hopefully we can get through both nights clean and we’ll see where that leaves us.”
Tankersley is also seeking a victory to extend his winning streak at Battleground Speedway to three consecutive years.
