Mark Dobmeier overcame a rough qualifying effort to finish fifth last Friday with the World of Outlaws in his hometown River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, North Dakota. The weekend was capped by a seventh place run with the FVP National Sprint League at Huset’s Speedway in South Dakota Sunday. If Mark can win at Knoxville Raceway this Saturday with the NSL, he will be eligible for the $25,000 DeBerg Concrete Triple Crown Challenge with a win at the Jackson Nationals in Minnesota on Saturday, September 5.
Mark registered the 20th quick time of the night with the WoO on Friday. “We didn’t qualify very well,” he admits. “We drew a late pill. We were supposed to start sixth in the heat, but Brad Sweet had crashed on his second lap of qualifying. He had to change cars. That put us up to fourth in the heat. We got the lead on the second lap and drove away.”
The stroke of luck put him in the Dash. “That kept us alive,” says Mark. “They had prepped the track right before the Dash. It was kind of one-lane. We started eighth and finished eighth.”
Mark put on one of his signature charges at River Cities. “The race was going well,” he says. “I was clicking guys off and moving forward. We were up to third for quite some time. We had a red with twelve laps to go. The driver was tough on his tires getting from eighth to third. I had blistered the right rear tire pretty bad. It cooled off and we faded to fifth on the restart. It was a good run, but not the win we were looking for.”
He would come out 23rd in the order and time in 12th quick at Huset’s on Sunday with the NSL. He would move from third to second in his heat. “That didn’t give us enough points to get in the redraw,” says Mark. “I think one more spot would have. We started twelfth in the feature, and we made it up to seventh.”
