Inside Line Promotions – PEVELY, Mo. (Aug. 11, 2015) – Jason Sides is ready for the biggest event of the season this week.
Sides enters the 55th annual FVP Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s General Store, which is hosted by Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, this Wednesday through Saturday, with high expectations.
“This is the toughest event of the year,” he said. “It pays the most money and draws the best racers so when you do well at the Knoxville Nationals you’ve had to earn it. We’ve made the main event in the past and I know we can do that again this year. That’s the first goal.”
Sides is slated to compete in preliminary competition this Wednesday to open the premier sprint car event.
“The key is to put down a good qualifying lap and then make it through the heat race,” he said. “If you can do that you’re set up really well for the remainder of the weekend.”
Sides, who was the 2001 Knoxville Nationals Rookie of the Year, has an event-best result of 12th place in 2010. He has earned a top 20 during the event six times.
“We have a handful of finishes between 12th and 20th, but we’re still seeking that first top 10 there,” he said. “Hopefully we can put together a strong preliminary night and put ourselves in contention for Saturday.”
Sides is coming off the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series Ironman 55 doubleheader at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 last weekend, which began with a fifth-place qualifying effort on Friday. Sides then placed third in a heat race and second in the dash to line up on the outside of the front row for the main event.
“The bottom lane wasn’t very strong and we didn’t get the car how it needed to be able to run the top groove as well as a lot of other people,” he said. “We hung on to a top 10 throughout the race though.”
Sides ended with a 10th-place result, which marked his 31st top 10 of the season.
The weekend concluded on Saturday with Sides qualifying 19th quickest, finishing seventh in a heat race and scoring a second-place result during the Last Chance Showdown. He then advanced from 19th to 16th place during the feature.
