Inside Line Promotions – PETALUMA, Calif. (Aug. 10, 2015) – Chase Johnson powered to a pair of top-five finishes last Saturday at Petaluma Speedway, where he did double duty during the 4th annual Soares Classic.
Johnson piloted a wingless sprint car for Shawn and Cyndi Thomas and a micro sprint for Steve Kaiser during the event at his home track.
“I want to give a big thanks to Steve Kaiser for the opportunity and to Shawn and Cyndi Thomas for allowing me to race both classes,” he said. “It was a fun night.”
The event began on a sour note during Johnson’s micro sprint heat race, which he started on the outside of the third row.
“I went into the first corner and a car in front of us ended up getting turned around,” he said. “I got collected in it. That broke the right rear shock so we went back to the pits and didn’t have enough time to fix that issue.”
The DNF forced Johnson to start on the inside of the ninth row for the 20-lap main event.
“That put us pretty far back in the feature,” he said. “I just picked off cars the best I could. I had a really fast car. I ran it all the way up to fourth by a caution on Lap 7. They told us there were three laps to go because of the time. I made the pass for third on the restart and then on that same lap the guy I passed ended up spinning out so they called the race right there.”
Johnson was credited with a third-place result.
He had an efficient night in the wingless sprint class beginning with a sixth-place qualifying result. Johnson then won a heat race to lock himself into the dash, where a third-place finish started him on the inside of the second row for the 50-lap feature.
“I ran third for the first couple of laps in the main event,” he said. “Then I made an error and got in some rough stuff. I fell back to fifth and was cruising around there. I ended up getting a flat right front tire. I could really start to feel that on Lap 23. There was a caution and the officials told me I had a flat tire. I chose to stay out because we’d have a competition caution on Lap 25. I putted around for the next couple of laps and fell back to 10th, but stayed on the lead lap.
“We were able to fill the car up with fuel and change that tire during the competition caution. After the restart we came from last to finish fourth. We were picking off cars one by one. It seemed like with about 10 laps to go the track got really slick and I was able to use that to my advantage. The car really came to life and we were able to pick off a lot of positions.”
Johnson’s fourth-place result marked his third top five of the year.
