Inside Line Promotions – LAWTON, Okla. (Aug. 4, 2015) – Cody Wampler registered his first sprint car feature victory in more than a dozen years last Saturday at Lawton Speedway.
Wampler led the distance of the Oil Capital Racing Series main event, which was his first win since 2003.
“It’s a relief and it’s been pure joy,” he said. “Our car owner is super excited. It’s great to share that with him and my family.”
Wampler and car owner Randall Buzbee kicked off the race by finishing second in a heat race after starting on the outside of the front row.
“We were put out early and the track was pretty greasy,” Wampler said. “I don’t think anybody moved anywhere really. Somehow we made the top-eight redraw.”
Wampler then pulled the No. 2 during the random draw to garner a starting position on the outside of the front row for the 30-lap feature.
“The track was really heavy,” he said. “That was not our type of track. We freed it up from the heat race to the feature. I rolled out there and it was slicker than I was thinking. I was like ‘There’s no way we’re going to be able to hold on.’”
Wampler did just that as he took the top spot during the opening lap and never looked back.
“I was able to take the lead out of turn four on the first lap,” he said. “We were pretty good. I hugged the bottom and we rolled around there pretty good. Nobody ever really showed up.”
Following a caution on Lap 4 the race went green until the checkered flag with Wampler out front.
“The car was about perfect for the condition of the track,” he said. “I didn’t make any mistakes and we pulled it off. The car was so good on the bottom and it seemed like everybody else struggled more down there. It was great to get a win.”
Wampler will return to action this Saturday at Lawton Speedway.
