Inside Line Promotions – ELMA, Wash. (Aug. 2, 2015) – Trey Starks added another runner-up result to his statistics on Saturday at Grays Harbor Raceway.

“Another second,” he said. “It seems like that’s 20 seconds this year. I hate finishing second. It’s my least favorite position because you’re so close to winning. This race in particular I’ve never felt so close to winning than I did this one and we didn’t actually win. That’s just how it goes. I guess it’s better than third. We’re just really itching for some more wins.”

Starks registered his fourth second-place result in his last six races on Saturday at the 3/8-mile oval, where he has earned a podium finish during all five events this season.

The night began with Starks qualifying third quickest despite being the last car out for qualifying. He then advanced from fourth to second place during a heat race.

“In the heat we ran pretty good,” he said. “The track was one lane around the bottom. Everybody was the same speed. Toward the end I did a little searching on the track because I was trying to figure out what groove would work in the main event. You knew the top would come in at some point in the night.”

The feature inversion then placed Starks on the outside of the front row for the 25-lap main event.

“There was an initial start and we got the jump,” he said. “We led the first lap, but there was a caution so it got called back. On the second one we started pretty even (with polesitter Henry Van Dam). He just slid in front of me going into one. We got a little crossed up. A couple of laps later I tried a big slider going into turn one. I pulled just even with him off turn two, but he had a little more momentum.”

Starks stayed within striking distance throughout the main event, but he was unable to make a bid for the lead.

“Cautions hurt us all night and we were terrible on restarts,” he said. “We had a little bit of a stumble in the engine and he’d get out on us. It’d take us a few laps to reel him back in. We had a restart with two laps to go and I knew that we might not have a shot at him again.”

Starks finished second, which marked his 18th top five of the season.

He is scheduled to compete this Saturday at Skagit Speedway in Alger, Wash.
