Inside Line Promotions – CHILLICOTHE, Ohio (Aug. 2, 2015) – Kevin Swindell secured his second straight top-five finish on Saturday at Atomic Speedway.
Swindell, who teamed up with Bernie Stuebgen and Tom Buch during the UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions Open Wheel Championships, opened the night by qualifying third quickest in his group and 16th overall.
“We were really good in hot laps when the track had a little grip,” he said. “The slicker it got the more we chased our tail. I was third quick for the group so that put us on the front of a heat, which is what you need. We were good enough to get through and into the dash.”
Swindell maintained second place throughout the heat race to lock himself into the dash, where he lined up on the outside of the front row.
“In the dash we tried to get a little more creative,” he said. “We tried to figure something out. When it got to where you had to run through the slick and there wasn’t anything to lean on we couldn’t get ahold of it.”
Swindell faded to a seventh-place result, which started him on the inside of the fourth row for the main event.
“We got better for the feature,” he said. “They watered it just a little around the bottom. I got everything out of that little bit of moisture I could. I got going after a little bit and I think we were as good as those guys in front. We just let them get too far out at the beginning.”
Swindell ended with a fifth-place result.
“That’s not a type of race track we’ve really ever messed with much,” he said. “That was a new thing for me and Bernie. That was two or three times tighter than we’ve got at a race track and it still wasn’t tight enough.”
Swindell and Stuebgen will compete this Friday and Saturday at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, for the 25th annual Arnold Motor Supply 360 Knoxville Nationals. The team will also race at the track on Sunday during the 4th annual Capitani Classic.
