Mother Nature finally cooperated and allowed the STM #64 team to race two nights this past weekend. The first night started out on Friday at Oshkosh Speedzone with the IRA Series. After a mid-pack qualifying effort, Scotty started deep in the pack and charged his way to a solid sixth place finish and followed that performance up at Wilmot Raceway with the Allstar Circuit of Champions with a charge to a ninth place finish.
Scotty drew a 40 pill which placed him to go out 20th in the qualifying order Friday night at Oshkosh. On a super slick track early on, Scotty managed to pull of the 13th quickest time overall. He started out third in the heat race event and maintained the second position for nine laps before attempting to pass a lap car and fell back to the third position. It was a solid effort but Scotty just missed the invert draw for the A-main and would have to start the 30 lap event in the 16th position. The track was dry and tricky all night long for a lot of drivers and Scotty knew he would have to work every inch of the track to move forward. After taking the green flag for the main, Scotty worked through the middle groove and moved into the top ten in the first couple of laps. He worked his patients’ level and picked off a car lap by lap. The race would go green for all 30 laps and Scotty managed to charge his way to a 6th place finish, earning the hard charger of the night. “This was a pretty good run for us tonight. We struggled a little in qualifying and that is what ultimately hurt us. Starting position is so crucial in this series and you need to be up front early on in order to win races. It was a good charge for us as the car was on rails all night. Just needed to improve early on.” Mentioned Thiel after the main event.
Saturday evening brought the team south to the Wilmot Raceway in Wilmot, Wisconsin. This event was a co-sanctioned event featuring the Allstar Circuit of Champions and the IRA Outlaw Sprints. Scotty drew a 54 pill and would be the second last car out for qualifying. After laying down a 14.160 lap time, it was 25th quick out of 38 cars in attendance. Scotty was not pleased with the qualifying run and the car was ill handling for both laps. It hurt the team again by being down on the chart. Scotty would start sixth in the heat race event. He worked his way up through the field in the heat after giving everything he had in him to charge through on tacky track. After ten laps of heat race action, Scotty crossed the line in the fourth spot, earning a transfer position into the nights 30 lap A-main event! Thiel would go on and again start out in the 16th position. The track became very wide throughout the night but still had plenty of moisture to utilize. The crew prepared the car and sent Scotty out on the track. He knew he would have to work both sides of the track to make any sort of effort to move forward. The green flag flew and the field charged into turn one. Scotty worked the top side of the track early on and would begin his process forward. A few cautions came into play and helped Thiel out by getting the field bunched back up. Scotty continued to work the top side but did have to go low a few laps to work around the lap cars. With three laps to go, a caution flew and Scotty found himself in the eighth position. After returning to green flag action, he didn’t slow his momentum down and charged the top side of the track. He made his move into the seventh spot and was inches away from sixth. The white flag flew and Scotty was getting setup to slide his way into sixth but jumped the cushion and upset the car pretty bad. He initially thought something broke on the front end of the car but it was just packed full of mud, causing the axle to be pushed up on the car. He regathered himself down the backstretch and fell back to the ninth position as he charged back and crossed the finish line. “Well it was a pretty solid effort tonight after struggling early on again in qualifying. We just made a bad call on setup and it hurt us badly. Qualifying past mid pack on a night where there so many quality cars makes things very tough. We fought back and ended up 9th. I know we were good enough to be up in the top five but just needed more laps. Overall it was a good night for how it all started.” Explained Thiel after the event.
Next up on the Scott Thiel Motorsports schedule is a three day weekend featuring action starting off Friday night at the Langlade County Fairgrounds in Antigo, WI. The team will then travel south to the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds and the Plymouth Dirt Track on Saturday and will wrap the weekend up at Seymour Speedway in Seymour, WI on Sunday evening! Torsion Bar Rate:
Torsion bar testing has been around as long as the bar has. There are many different ways to test bars, but they all have the same goal.... to compare one bar to another and give the results in a numerical value (PSI, FORCE POUNDS, RATE). This is good, but can be hard to understand. We simplify this process. The numbering system we use is standard to the torsion bar industries. During our test sessions, data is collected and stored in our software, which then calculates it to a torsion bar size that everyone can understand. We have found 1025 bars that test between a 1012 and a 1036 bar. Our test services take away the guesswork. We provide you with a TORSION BAR RATE. Check out www.torsionbarrate.com for more info!
