Wednesdays with Wayne – Three Podiums Cap Northwestern Tour!

(Bill W) July 29, 2015 – A pair of seconds and a third place finish capped off Wayne Johnson’s trip with the Lucas Oil ASCS tour to the Pacific Northwest. Last week, second place finishes in Gillette, Wyoming and Black Hills Speedway near Rapid City, South Dakota ended the month long tour. Thursday and Friday, Wayne will compete at the “Road to Knoxville” at I-80 Speedway near Greenwood, Nebraska with ASCS. Saturday will find him close to home at Knoxville Raceway in Iowa as he readies for the 360 Nationals.

A week ago Friday, ASCS visited Electric City Speedway in Great Falls, Montana. “We’ve never really done well in Great Falls,” says Wayne. “We were just o.k. all night long. The elevation change really affects my motors. I don’t lean them down as much as they say to do. I’m a little afraid to do that. We just kind of maintained in the feature, and that’s what we had, was a sixth place car.”

Billings Motorsports Park was a new track for Wayne on Saturday, July 18. “We were really good in the heat (winning from outside row one),” he says. “We put the other motor in for that race. Originally, we were supposed to start fourth in the feature, but with crashes we ended up starting third. We were able to take the lead on the next start, but they called that back. On the next start, I didn’t get a good one. I fell back to fourth.”

He kept at it, and was vying for second by the end of the race. “We were able to get to third,” says Wayne. “Johnny (Herrera) had the lead and (Aaron) Reutzel was second. Our car was really good. We were able to get by Reutzel for second. At that point, we got into a crazy slide fest and we ended up third. We got to second again, but the lap count was off. They brought the checkered and the yellow flags out. We had to do a green, white, checker to finish it. Everyone thought it was over. Fans were leaving. In fact, we had our belts off. But we ended up doing two more laps and ended up third.”

Another new track awaited last Wednesday at Gillette Thunder Speedway in Wyoming. “We were second (from sixth) in the heat to Reutzel,” says Wayne. “We were pretty good there. Our draws haven’t been the greatest, and we drew an eight.”

Wayne would charge to a second place finish. “I couldn’t get my motor to run how I needed to out in that air,” he says. “We did keep at it, and got it better for the feature. We ran up to second, and ran Reutzel down in traffic. We had a lapped car run us off the back straight with about four to go. It was over at that point. We ended up second.”

He would start fourth in his heat Friday at Black Hills Speedway. “We ran second, but the water temperature got hot. We had struggled with the motor, and it only turned 5200 r.p.m. on the bottom end in the feature. It needs to turn 7000.”

Wayne would start inside row three for the feature. “I actually passed Johnny for second at one time, but the caution came out,” he says. “That put us back in third, but on the restart with five or six to go, Reutzel was leading and blew up. It just took forever for us to get going and we finished second, but I really felt we should have won the race with a motor that wasn’t running. Nobody had anything for Reutzel before he blew though.”
