Wampler Finishes Sixth During First Race at Southern Oklahoma in More Than a Decade

Inside Line Promotions – LAWTON, Okla. (July 28, 2015) – Cody Wampler competed in a pair of races last weekend for the first time this season.

“I picked the hottest weekend of the year to do it as well,” he joked.

Wampler kicked off last weekend on Friday with the Oil Capital Racing Series at Southern Oklahoma Speedway in Ardmore, Okla., where he advanced from fourth to third place in a heat race during his first race at the track in approximately 15 years.

“We were pretty good in the heat,” he said. “We were on the verge of passing for second. I was told we had the fourth quickest lap time out of all the heat races so I felt pretty good about it.”

That earned him a spot in the feature redraw where he pulled the No. 3 during the random draw to line up on the inside of the second row for the 25-lap main event.

“I ran second until about halfway through the race and then we just kind of faded at the end,” he said. “We didn’t tighten the car up enough for the bottom. That’s where I wanted to be. The top had a pretty heavy, rough cushion on it. We were too tight for banging against the cushion. In the last two laps we got passed by two guys. Overall I was pretty pleased though.”

Wampler ended with a sixth-place result, which was his fourth top 10 of the season.

The weekend concluded on Saturday at Lawton Speedway, where Wampler maneuvered from fourth to second place during a heat race. He then started the 20-lap main event on the outside of the fourth row.

“We were really having a good run,” he said. “It was probably the fastest we’ve been in the car all year. About Lap 10 or 11 we were battling for second. I slid a guy in turns one and two. He got back by me coming out of turn two and another guy got by me down the back straightaway. I slid him again in turns three and four and I felt like I had him cleared, but I was trying to keep it down as much as I could. He tried to risk going between me and the wall. We banged wheels and it knocked the front end down.”

Wampler’s night ended early following the crash.

“The track was bone slick from the bottom to the cushion and everybody was running on the top,” he said. “Slide jobs were the way to pass. It was fun racing.”

Wampler will return to Lawton Speedway this Saturday with the OCRS.
