Inside Line Promotions – MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (July 26, 2015) – Sammy Swindell captured a pair of top fives last weekend during a busy week of competition in Pennsylvania.
Swindell earned results of third and fourth, respectively, during the Summer Nationals at Williams Grove Speedway in his second week of competition with CJB Motorsports.
“Williams Grove went real well for us overall,” he said. “A third and a fourth is not bad. To be that competitive two nights in a row at that place, where you never know how things will play out, is a good achievement.”
Swindell kicked off the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series doubleheader last Friday by qualifying eighth quickest in his group. That put him on the pole of a heat race, which Swindell won to lock himself into the dash.
“We were a little too tight and didn’t have the right gear in during qualifying,” he said. “Then we made a few adjustments for the heat and drove away. In the dash we tried a different wing and it didn’t fit with what we were doing so we went back. We also made a few changes for the feature and it was all pretty good.”
Swindell, who finished eighth in the dash, maneuvered from eighth to third place during the main event at the half-mile oval. It was his first podium finish with the World of Outlaws in a little more than one year.
“To come from eighth up to third was pretty good,” he said. “We got in some traffic and I didn’t get the good breaks. Then they had a caution at the end. Our car wasn’t as good as the front two off the restarts. It would take me about three laps and then I could make some good laps.”
Swindell continued to run well on Saturday at Williams Grove Speedway, where he set quick time in his group and overall during qualifying to start the Summer Nationals. Swindell finished fifth in a heat race to advance into the dash, which he won to garner the pole for the 30-lap feature.
Unfortunately, Swindell was penalized one row after officials called him for jumping the initial start.
“They decided to put me back,” he said. “It would have been a lot easier to hold those guys off than it was to try to pass them. It was difficult to even pass lapped cars. It was unfortunate for us not to get to start on the front. I think we could have held ground the way the race went.”
Swindell battled for a second straight podium throughout the main event before he ended fourth, which marked his ninth top five of the season.
Swindell and CJB Motorsports also competed at the Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup last Tuesday at Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pa. Swindell qualified 18th quickest in his group, but he charged from ninth to fifth place during a heat race to advance into the first of twin main events on the high-banked track.
“Qualifying is what really put us behind,” he said. “We changed some bars around and changed the ride heights and shocks. We did quite a few things. The car was quite a bit better in the heat. We made a few more changes and it felt better for the first feature.”
Swindell rallied from 24th to post a 13th-place result during the first main event. He then spent most of the second feature, which inverted the lead lap cars from the first main event, inside the top five before fading late in the race and ending 19th.
“We tried a softer right rear tire,” he said. “It was good and I got to fifth at the start, but we didn’t have the car quite right for that combination. It polished that tire up instead of wearing it. The last six or seven laps we got pretty slow.”
Swindell will return to action this Saturday at Randolph County Raceway in Moberly, Mo., driving for Donnie Cooper.
