Inside Line Promotions – ROSSBURG, Ohio (July 22, 2015) – Kevin Swindell was part of a special tribute to Jason Leffler last weekend during the 32nd annual Kings Royal.
Swindell teamed up with Bernie Stuebgen and the Indy Race Parts as well as Tom Buch during the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series doubleheader at Eldora Speedway, where the team donned the No. 13 and posted “Leffler” across the front of the top wing.
“I lived right across the street from him for a couple of years,” Swindell said of Leffler. “I knew him pretty well and spent a good amount of time with him. It was cool to be a part of something like that to honor him.”
Unfortunately, the team battled mechanical woes throughout the weekend.
“The first night it had a leak in the water pump and we could never get the engine to get hot,” he said. “If you can’t keep it warm it doesn’t want to run well. We were in a losing battle from hot laps on.”
Swindell qualified 21st quickest in his group before advancing from seventh to fifth place during a heat race, which relegated him into a Last Chance Showdown during Friday's Knight Before the Kings Royal.
“We had a box go bad, too,” he said. “We got everything fixed for the B Main and we got better. We got what we could and tried to learn about the car.”
Swindell rallied from 12th to sixth place during the consolation race, but missed a transfer into the main event.
The team continued to fight mechanical problems on Saturday, when the action began with Swindell qualifying 32nd quickest overall – only a couple spots out of the 30-car heat race inversion.
“Our lap was decent, but we went out early and the dust cleaned off and it actually got faster,” he said.
Following a rain delay of more than four hours Swindell finished where he started – sixth – in a heat race before making a charge from 14th to ninth in the Last Chance Showdown.
“When we went back out to hot lap at night (after the rain delay) I was as fast as (Daryn) Pittman was,” he said. “Then we went out for the heat race and it was like we had a 360ci engine in. Something was inconsistent within the fuel system. For the B Main we threw curveballs at the car to learn something since we figured we wouldn’t make it from 14th.”
