Inside Line Promotions – BILLINGS, Mont. (July 20, 2015) – Johnny Herrera has hit his stride as the summer is heating up across the country.
Herrera has recorded five straight top-four finishes, including two last weekend in Montana with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.
“It’s a good time to get rolling good and get momentum going,” he said. “We have the momentum and want to continue it. Everything is headed in the right direction.”
Herrera kicked off the doubleheader last Friday by advancing from sixth to third place during his heat race at Electric City Speedway in Great Falls. That earned him a spot in the feature redraw, where he pulled the No. 6 to start the main event on the outside of the third row.
“It was kind of a locked-down race track,” he said. “We had some rain showers delay us during the night. I got a couple positions on the start and then fell in line. We had a good car and I was happy how it turned out.”
Herrera ended with a fourth-place result.
The weekend concluded on Saturday at Billings Motorsports Park, where Herrera maneuvered from fourth to second place during a heat race to advance into the feature redraw. This time he pulled the No. 3 to start the main event on the inside of the second row.
“There was an incident on the opening lap so we had to criss-cross to restart the race, which lined me up on the outside of the front row,” he said. “I got the lead off the bat. We had a really good race car. I had a straightaway lead at one time and I got into lapped traffic and got slowed down.”
Herrera’s sizeable advantage disappeared in traffic during the closing laps.
“We were racing three and four wide,” he said. “(Aaron) Reutzel put a slider on me at one time. I drove back underneath him.”
A late caution allowed Herrera to have clear track and he maintained the top spot during the final stage of the race for his second Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour win in the last three races.
“Racing with Aaron, Wayne (Johnson), Seth (Bergman), you have to run hard the whole race,” he said. “You can’t take a breather. You try to be a little cautious with lapped cars, but you have to push it every lap.”
Herrera, who ranks second in the ASCS National Tour championship standings, will make his debut at Gillette Thunder Speedway in Gillette, Wyo., on Wednesday before racing on Friday at Black Hills Speedway in Rapid City, S.D., with the series.
