Inheriting the lead after misfortune struck Jamie Ball on lap nine, John Schulz of West Burlington then held off the persistent challenges of current point leader Tony Shilling to take the $1,500 Shottenkirk.com Sprint Invaders victory at the Cedar County Fair in Tipton Friday night.
Schulz started the 25-lap event from the pole position, but it was his front row mate Jamie Ball who raced out to the early advantage dominating the first portion of the race. As the leader was working traffic on lap nine though, the left rear wheel broke off of the car of Tim Moore sending him for a spin right in front of the leader. With no place to go Ball made heavy contact with Moore and the the lapped car of Derek Anderson joined the fray tipping over onto his side to bring out the red flag.
Schulz would soon lead the field back to green with Shilling in hot pursuit when on lap 18 Schulz had his own scare when Blaine Jamison spun directly in front of him turn four with the leader narrowly escaping contact. Shilling made a bid to the inside of Schulz on the restart but his challenge was interrupted by two more cautions for spins, the last one leaving him with just three laps around the quarter-mile to make his move.
As the white flag waved Shilling had a run and threw the slider on Schulz going into turn one, but the veteran driver countered with a pretty crossover move to regain the lead in two and he then protected the bottom in the final two turns to earn the win. Shilling just missed on a clean sweep after winning both his heat at the Randall’s Performance Shake Up Dash, Harold Pohren finished in the third position followed by Jarrod Schneiderman and Jon Agan.
“I could hear him coming and I knew that he would make a run at me on the final lap,” said the happy winner in victory lane, “but I already had my move planned to get it back.” Schulz then noted that he won a track championship here in Tipton about twenty years ago “in believe it or not a Hobby Stock, so I guess that dates me a bit”. The winning car #99 is owned by Jimmy Davies and is sponsored by Global Industries, Automotive Machine and Fangman & Sons.
The next event for the Shottenkirk.com Sprint Invaders will be next Friday July 17th at the Davis County Fair in Bloomfield.
