Inside Line Promotions – WATSONVILLE, Calif. (July 13, 2015) – Dominic Scelzi remains optimistic following a frustrating weekend at Ocean Speedway.

Scelzi was unable to finish the Civil War Sprint Car Series feature on Friday and the King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series main event on Saturday during the Howard Kaeding Classic because of tough luck, which snapped his string of earning a top 10 during all 17 previous races at the quarter-mile oval.

“It was really disappointing, but I think we just struggled to have luck,” he said. “We’ll rebound this weekend and get back into the flow of things.”

Last weekend kicked off on Friday with Scelzi qualifying 25th quickest. He then finished eighth in a heat race, which relegated him to the B Main.

“We qualified really bad and had an even worse heat race,” he said. “We changed everything you could possibly change for the B Main. It helped quite a bit.”

Scelzi rallied to earn a transfer into the back of the main event, where he maneuvered from his 21st starting position into the top 10 with several laps remaining.

“We drove from 21st to 10th in 21 laps and then had a right front tire go flat,” he said. “That ended our night.”

The team returned to Ocean Speedway on Saturday for the King of the West event, which Scelzi began by setting quick time during qualifying.

“We went quick time by quite a bit, which was a really good deal,” he said. “Then in the heat race we got to second on the first lap and ended up running second, which was another really good run.”

That locked him into the dash redraw, where he pulled the highest number – eight – to start on the outside of the fourth row. Scelzi picked up three positions to finish fifth, earning him the fifth starting position for the feature.

“They reworked the track before the main event and we thought it’d do something different than it did,” he said. “I fought a tight race car for most of the race, but I was running sixth with three laps to go and we broke a rod in the engine. We were extremely fast. If we had ended sixth we would have extended our points lead quite a bit.”

Unfortunately, Scelzi was unable to finish the race and he was credited with a 21st-place result. That dropped him to second in the King of the West championship standings – only five points out of the lead.

He will return to competition this Saturday at Placerville Speedway in Placerville, Calif., with the King of the West.
