Brian Brown – Devil DNF’s!

Brian Brown – Devil DNF’s!

(Bill W) October 20, 2009 – Brian Brown is glad to be leaving the “Lone Star State” after a rough couple weeks of weather and luck. Last weekend, the Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite hosted the Lucas Oil ASCS Series. A wreck on Saturday and a DNF on Sunday after an official’s decision put a damper on things. The Brian Brown Racing SuperClean #21 team will now ready for the Short Track Nationals at I-30 Speedway south of Little Rock, Arkansas at the end of the month.

Thursday, it was time for some fun for a good cause with the 3rd Annual Steve King Foundation Golf Tournament. The tournament was held at the Buffalo Creek Golf Club in Rockwall, Texas. “We had fun at the golf tournament for the Steve King Foundation,” says Brian. “Smiley’s helped put it on, and they are a big supporter of mine. Golf tournaments aren’t an easy task and they do a great job with this one. I hear the foundation is going to help out Travis Rutz, which is a great thing.”

Things started rough on Saturday with a heat race accident. “We started behind Ricky Logan and Mark Shirshekan there,” explains Brian. “I thought we had a good shot to do well in that heat. We really needed to win it with 60 cars there. The track was tough on tires, and it took a couple of starts for us to get going. The guys in front of me were on the bottom, and I was up a lane or so. A lap in we got down to one and two, and either Ricky checked up, or Mark misjudged, but they got into each other and I got over Mark’s right rear and took a ride.”

Brian was uninjured and ready for action again on Sunday. “We got lucky in that it didn’t hurt the car,” he says. “Most of the damage was bolt-on stuff, but it ended our night. We came back on Sunday, and we were going to see where we drew, and decide if we’d stay or head home. You know how that works, though. We drew badly, but we stayed anyway.”

Starting in row four, Brian was able to surge to second and grab the second highest point total through the heats. “The heat worked out well for us and it was some good racing,” he says. “We had a good race with Jesse Hockett and Andy Shouse and the Maxim was working well. The car responded well after the crash. That got us in the redraw.”

Brian ran well in the feature. “The six was left in the draw, so that’s where we started,” he says. “We were in fourth or fifth there racing with Shane Stewart pretty hard. Shane’s nose wing came off and he was using a lot of the track to try to keep his momentum. He’s running for a championship, so you want to race him hard, but you want to race him clean too. We kind of took what was given to us at that point.”

Cautions took their toll, and several competitors were sputtering at the end. Brian crossed the checkered flags in the top five, but the race was not deemed complete. “We were up to third or fourth, and I could tell we were running out of fuel with a couple laps to go,” he says. “Several of us took the checkered flag. That ends the race anywhere else. I don’t know if the flagman fell asleep there at Devil’s Bowl or what, but the race was over. Somehow, they called for a green, white, checker finish, and the motor wouldn’t take off. I had to pull it in. It was a bad deal. Instead of finishing fourth or fifth, we had a DNF. I don’t know what happened. All ASCS could give us was an ‘I’m sorry,’ but it was an expensive one for us. They said they were 15 seconds from a mandatory fuel stop. We topped off the tank, and we were one of the first out to staging. I guess we won’t be next time.”

Brian is excited about getting to Little Rock for the Short Track Nationals running October 29-31. Last year, he finished in the runner-up spot. “I don’t know that we could have caught (early leader, Tim) Crawley before he dropped out, and then Tony Bruce got by us and won it. I’m looking forward to getting back there. It’s become a great atmosphere and Tracey Clay does a great job promoting it. A lot of times it’s the best racing of the year for a race fan.”

Brian's Q&A
Sam Wedeking asks: What do you think of your chances in Little Rock?
Brian answers: I look forward to getting back down there. We have had some success, especially on the final night. The ASCS National guys have only run there one night this year, I think, so they shouldn’t have a huge advantage. It’s wide open, and I think we have a good chance to win it.

Brown's Bits
Brian has an outstanding record at the Short Track Nationals, but the only thing he is missing is a win. Counting prelims, in eight career feature starts at the STN he has four top fives and six top tens against the top competition in the country. He has two second place finishes including last year’s prelim, a third (last year’s finale) and a fourth. His second place finish in the 2006 finale came after having to transfer through the B main.
