A great Friday night of racing was set for the Scott Thiel Motorsports team as they traveled to the Dodge County Speedway in Beaver Dam, WI to racing at the Horsepower Half mile with the IRA. This event happens only twice a year and it is an exciting show with speeds reaching 150mph! Scotty drew a late pill for qualifying but made it up as he put down a seventh quick time overall and followed that up with a third place heat race finish. After starting on the pole of the 23 lap Rick Schmidt Memorial, Scotty led 20 laps straight before bad luck struck once again.
30 IRA sprint cars were on hand Friday night at Dodge County Speedway. Scotty drew a 66 pill which set him to go out 30th overall. The track began to slick off as qualifying progressed but Scotty knew he would just have to hit his marks and things should be fine. After laying down a 17.717 lap time, it was seventh quick overall! That placed him to start fourth in the eight lap heat race event. The green flag flew for the heat event and Scotty charged his way to the top side of the track. As he was building up momentum he moved into the third position. The leaders were in sight and he managed to pull his way up to them and created a two car battle for the second position. After a fast eight laps of racing, Scotty was unable to move into second and finished in a close third place. By having a quick qualifying effort, he was still able to make the A-main invert redraw. The invert number was drawn and it placed Scotty to start on the pole of the 23 lap Rick Schmidt Memorial A-main event!
The STM crew went to work to prepare the car for 23 laps of racing. Scotty was ready to go and pushed off onto the track. He felt pretty comfortable with the car and knew this was going to be a stressful 23 laps. The field received the command to form into the four wide salute to the fans as they idled down the long front stretch. After lining back up, Scotty led the field down to turn three and prepared for the green flag. Coming out of turn four, it was hammer down. Scotty launched down the front stretch and slid up to the cushion in turn one and two. He stormed into the lead and began to move away from the field. A quick caution came out on lap three and that was followed by a red two laps later. After getting things cleaned up and ready, Scotty again led the field back to green. After charging hard again, Scotty started to build up a commanding lead. Lap traffic was quickly approaching but that did not phase Thiel one bit. He started to move around the track and pulled even farther away from the lead lap cars. With only three laps to go, Scotty was nearly a full straight away ahead of the second place car but a caution flag came out for a cone being knocked onto the track in turn one. While under caution, Scotty began to feel the car sputtering and went into fuel conserve mode. As the field was preparing to take the one to go signal, Scotty’s car shut off. The biggest heartbreak of the night as there was only 3 laps to go and knowing the lead he built up. Thiel would get pushed back to the work area but the field went to green right away. That ultimately ended Thiel’s night and would have to settle for an 18th place finish. “It’s just a frustrating night. When you start up front on a big track like this it only helps with clean air. The motor breathes much better and helps you pull away from the field. That’s what we had working for us. I knew we would be close on fuel all night but there were some unnecessary caution laps taken that didn’t help our fuel mileage. It’s a huge bummer not only for myself as we were just that close to our first IRA win of the year but for my crew and my sponsors. We have had a very rocky season thus far and a win would have helped patch up that slump we have been in. We’ll regroup and work harder for next weekend.” Scotty mentioned after a very disappointing evening.
The team was on schedule to go to Cedar Lake Speedway Saturday and Sunday with the World of Outlaws but potential weather in the forecast and a scheduling conflict led the team to stay back home and begin to prepare for the upcoming weekend.
Next up on tap for the Scott Thiel Motorsports #64 sprint car will be this coming weekend starting off at Eagle Valley Speedway in Jim Falls, Wisconsin on Saturday and then follow that up Sunday at Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, WI. Torsion Bar Rate:
Torsion bar testing has been around as long as the bar has. There are many different ways to test bars, but they all have the same goal.... to compare one bar to another and give the results in a numerical value (PSI, FORCE POUNDS, RATE). This is good, but can be hard to understand. We simplify this process. The numbering system we use is standard to the torsion bar industries. During our test sessions, data is collected and stored in our software, which then calculates it to a torsion bar size that everyone can understand. We have found 1025 bars that test between a 1012 and a 1036 bar. Our test services take away the guesswork. We provide you with a TORSION BAR RATE. Check out www.torsionbarrate.com for more info!
