Kyle Bellm continued the trend of advancing in Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour feature action by climbing from deep in the field for a pair of 12th place finishes in last weekend’s “Fred Brownfield Classic” at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, WA.
“Twelfth isn’t what we want, but it could be worse,” the leading series Rookie of the Year contender said after climbing to seventh in points over the weekend.
With an idle weekend for the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour, Bellm will take in Saturday night’s Mid-Season Championships at Grays Harbor Raceway aboard the PPG Automotive Finishes/Colorvision No. 14k Sprint Car before ASCS action continues in Montana next weekend.
Both ASCS nights at Grays Harbor offered up a similar theme; heat race issues followed up by advancing to a transfer position in “B” Main action and then climbing forward in “A” Main action.
Bellm went from 19th to 12th in Friday’s feature and then 18th to 12th in Saturday’s “Fred Brownfield Classic” finale aboard the Schure Built Suspensions/Christian County Collision Repair Sprint Car.
While not the optimum end result, all the right pieces appear to be in place for the driver of the Schaeffer’s Racing Oil machine.
“We have the speed, we just need a few things to go our way,” Bellm explains.
A key component is dodging heat race woes.
“We have to avoid the altercations in our heat races,” Bellm says. “It’s hard to come through the B’s and then expect to pass a lot of cars in the feature every time out, there are too many good cars to do that every night.”
Half way through his rookie campaign on the Lucas Oil ASCS National trail, Bellm and the Bybee Lawn Care/Dynotech Racing Engines team are well on track to meet their goals.
“We’re leading rookie points and still have a shot at getting up to fifth in points, that’s what we’ve got our sights on,” Bellm says.
That and a win or two along the way. Bellm will gun for that first win of the season on Saturday night at Grays Harbor Raceway’s Mid-Season Championships.
Note: Kyle Bellm and crew would like to extend a special thank you to the Ashe family for the contribution of some tires during this past weekend’s “Fred Brownfield Classic”. The generosity and support of the racing community in the Northwest can never be overestimated.
