Covington Motorsports- GLENPOOL, OK. (July 8, 2015) Matt Covington and new crew chief, Ryan Beechler, debuted at the Fred Brownfield Memorial races last weekend with the ASCS National Tour at Gray’s Harbor.
Covington made the feature both nights and showcased speed, despite what the results indicated.
On Friday night, Covington mounted a charge in the heat, battling for the lead. But the effort was cut short when Matt clipped the edge of the infield tire and had to pull pitside, resulting in a trip to the night’s B-main.
Due to the heat incident, Covington had to start at the tail-end in the B in the 16th position. Matt did all he could to transfer into the main with the limited green flag laps. But when the checkers fell, he was one spot short and had to use a provisional to start in the night’s A-main.
In the feature, Covington worked to move forward, making it up to 13th from 23rd before the track started to take rubber. Once the rubber was down, Matt continued to fight hard but ultimately had to settle for the 13th finishing position in the end.
On Saturday, Matt wasn’t cut any slack at the draw table. He had to start the heat from the rear. With a good setup and fast race car, Matt was able to work from 6th to 3rd. His heat finish placed him in the 12th starting position in the A Feature.
Covington had a trial getting started in the A-main, trying multiple groves high and low. After making a slight mistake on the top-side early in the race, Matt struggled the remainder of the feature to get inside the top-ten. With a yellow five laps to go, Matt had worked back up into the 9th position. Unfortunately, when the racing resumed, Covington was bunched up and trapped behind a couple of colliding cars on the top causing him to lose 6 spots. Having only a few laps left to charge back forward, Covington had to conclude the feature with a 15th place effort.
“I know on paper it looks like we didn’t have a good weekend,” stated Covington. “But, to be honest, we took a step in the right direction and I am excited for the next month or two and the races we have coming up. On Friday night I got us in trouble when I got too greedy and hit the tire in the heat. Once you have to go through the B, and then the track takes rubber in the main, there is not a lot you can do. That one was on me. Saturday we really had a pretty good night and were fast inside the top-ten most of the race. I just got caught up in couple incidents in the feature where some people got bunched up and unfortunately, I was in the same lane and was one of the losers on the deal. Sometimes you can benefit from those deals and sometimes you don’t. I know it’s only been a couple races, but the cars Ryan have given me are fast and just require a different driving style and feel to get used to. That is on me, but I am sure once I get 100% confident in the car we will be upfront and battling for a win sooner rather than later. We got an off-weekend this week and are up at Triple X making some changes to the car. They are great people and have always been good to me. I am excited to get back on the track the following weekend at Electric City Speedway.”
