Matt Covington and crew took on I-30 Speedway for the 2nd Annual Ralph Henson Memorial race over the past weekend. Matt would once again start the night off with a high draw by pulling pill number 50 out of 50 possible pills. The draw has not been kind to Matt the last couple of months but Matt is hoping that this will save the good draws for the last few big money races of the year. Matt was able to take his row five starting position in the heat and drive up to 5th. This would barley transfer Matt into the A-Main for the night. Matt and crew would watch the two B-Mains and hope to put the right dry slick set-up on the Maxim/Wesmar/Pro Shocks sprinter for the A-Main.
Matt would start the A-Main outside row eight. As the green flag would fall Matt was able to work forward only to have to halt for a red that would damage the Covington Motorsports sprint and top wing. As the yellow lights turned back on and the field was re-started Matt would pull the car into the work area to try and fix the wing and rear-end of the car. Matt would roll back onto the race track with a wounded racecar. Matt would re-start the race in 19th position and be unsure what the racecar would have left in it. To Matt's surprise the race car was still dialed in and Matt would start charging to the front. Passing car after car Matt would crack the top-ten before the final yellow of the night slowed the field. When racing resumed Matt would make one more charge to the front and drive into the 6th spot before the laps would run out and the checkers would fall. This would also earn Matt the hard charger award and bonus cash for the night!
To overcome the early incident and charge through the field, all in all it was a good night for the Covington Motorsports team. It was clear Matt was the fasted car on the race track but just ran out of laps to overcome the early crash and repairs. But on the positive note this gives Matt and the team confidence going into the Short Track Nationals at I-30 Speedway. Matt's next scheduled race is the ASCS Sooner regional race at Cowtown Speedway on Oct 9th and 10th. Matt and the team will take this weekend off to prepare and get the car in top-notch shape for the Cowtown Nationals and Sooner Championship. The Covington Motorsports Team is shooting for a strong showing to close the gap on the Sooner Region championship. Matt is still sitting 2nd in ASCS Sooner points and hopes he can make up the points difference at the final two races on Oct. 9th and 10th. Stay in tune with Matt through the team website, www.mattcovington95.com and a very special thanks goes out to T&L Foundry, C.G.
