The Lucas Oil ASCS National Series visited Brian Brown’s home state and he was ready. The Grain Valley, Missouri driver finished third in a stout 59-car field at the Lucas Oil Speedway near Wheatland Saturday night. This Friday, he plans to put the 410 in the SuperClean #21 and hit the Morgan County Speedway in Jacksonville, Illinois for the $7,100 to win “Shaheen’s Back from the Past” event.
Saturday drew the best in the 360 business to the “Diamond of Dirt Tracks”. “It’s always fun to be at a race like that when it’s so close to home,” says Brian. “It seemed like everyone and their brother was there with 59 cars. We ended up drawing pretty decent. We were supposed to start fifth in the heat race, but Randy Hibbs got sick, so that moved us up into row two. Instead of fifth to second, we really needed to win it after moving up to start third to make the feature redraw.”
What ensued was one of the best heat battles you’ll ever see. Brian ended up edging Jack Dover at the line for the win. “With Jack Dover, Sean McClelland and Zach Chappell in there, it was a pretty good heat,” he says. “We were able to chase around Jack Dover for seven laps and it was some of the best racing I’ve had in my life. It was great to know that we didn’t have to worry about crashing each other, and we were just trying to win it. Luckily, we did. Out of the seven heat races, ours was one of the five won on the last lap.”

Brian started the main event outside of row two. “My buddy Jacob was able to draw us a four on the redraw, so that went well,” he says. “We weren’t the best in the world early on; we were tight. Once the fuel load burned off, we were pretty good.”
The race was heating up and it looked like the event would go almost non-stop. “We had a pretty long green flag run and we were able to get by Gary Wright for third, and we were reeling in Jason Johnson for second,” says Brian. “The yellow came out at that point, and we had to go back behind Gary. Shane (Stewart) was so far gone that the battle was really for second.”
In the end, Brian would settle for a podium finish in third. “It took us awhile to pass Gary again, so we settled for third,” he says. “With all the cars there, I think it was a really good night for the SuperClean #21 team. We’re ready to hit these big 360 shows down South.”
Before the 360 shows hit on October 9 at Cowtown Speedway near Kennedale, Texas, Brian will try to get himself a big 410 win this weekend.
Michael Ross Memorial Foundation Softball Game Thursday
The Michael Ross Memorial foundation was established in memory of Michael Paul Ross, son of Tony and Kathy Ross, who passed away at the age of 5 from Tay-Sachs disease. The proceeds of the foundation go to the Bay Cliff Health Camp in Big Bay, MI. This camp is for handicapped children only, many with special care needs. The summer camp lasts six weeks and gives the children the ability to participate in activities while learning specific strategies to aid them and their handicaps. Funding is raised to help families with the financial burden that comes with visiting the camp.
Gates will open at 4:00 on Thursday at CommunityAmerican Ball Park in Kansas City, Kansas with a home run derby scheduled for 6:30. First pitch of the softball game is set for approximately 7:15. Brian's Q&A
Darren Norton asks: Is it important to be a good salesman to get sponsors?
Brian answers: I think the biggest part is getting to know the product and what it means to yourself and the fan. You need to have a passion for it, and think about different ways you can partner with people outside of the racecar. You have to give the people you’re partnering with a way to get a return on your investment. You can’t just be a salesman, you have to know what you’re selling and how to present it.
