Inside Line Promotions – WAKEENEY, Kan. (June 30, 2015) – Zach Blurton recorded his first feature victory of the season last Sunday at WaKeeney Speedway with the United Rebel Sprint Series.
The win propelled Blurton into the lead of the URSS Kansas Region’s championship standings and gave the team a big boost after opening the year with a top-10 finish during each of the first 10 races.
“We finally were able to get a win and this one was special to me because I was without my dad and he’s my crew chief,” he said. “It gives me a lot of confidence with the race car. It always seems like we’ve been fast and it finally happened. To get the first one out of the way hopefully it will come easier to win now.”
Blurton kicked off the event by rallying from seventh to fourth place in a heat race, which locked him into the feature redraw. The revenge style format, where one competitor pulls a number and hands it to a fellow driver to determine the starting lineup, resulted in Blurton being given the No. 7 to start on the inside of the fourth row for the 25-lap feature.
“We started out running the bottom and the car was good from the beginning,” he said. “We got a couple of cars on the start to get up to fifth. We picked one more off on the bottom and I got into fourth before a red flag around the midpoint of the feature.
“The two cars in front of me were a straightaway ahead at least. I don’t think we would have caught them. We had an open red and I had the guys tighten the car up. After the red the thing was a rocket. Everybody was running the bottom and I went one lane above them.”
Blurton quickly maneuvered into the lead on Lap 15 and he cruised to the victory.
Last weekend began on Friday at Dodge City Raceway Park in Dodge City, Kan., with the URSS. Blurton advanced from third to second place in a heat race to make the feature redraw, where he was given the No. 8. That started him on the outside of the fourth row for the main event.
“The track was slick up to a curb about six-to-eight inches deep,” he said. “It was a hard track to run, but we still moved forward. I got up to fifth, but on the last lap I got passed.”
Blurton’s sixth-place result kept his streak of top-10 finishes alive.
He will take this weekend off before the first URSS National weekend begins July 10 at WaKeeney Speedway and July 11-12 at RPM Speedway in Hays, Kan.
