Covington has Solid Speedweeks, Ready To Race Up North

Covington Motorsports- GLENPOOL, OK. (June 23, 2015) Matt Covington had a pair of solid nights during this past weekend with the ASCS National Tour. Matt was able to pick up an 11th place finish on Friday at Salina Speedway, and an 8th place finish on Saturday at Lucas Oil Speedway to close out Speedweek.

On Friday night, Matt and the team took on the Salina Speedway in Kansas for the second round of Speedweek.

After a mid-pack draw, Covington finished 5th in his heat. The result lined Matt up in the 16th position for the feature, being the last car in from the heat race points.

In the feature, Matt was able to slowly move forward for most of the race and work his way toward cracking the top-10. However, Covington had to settle for just outside the top-10 at the wave of the checkers, ultimately coming home 11th.

Saturday night Covington and the crew prepped the car before making the trip to Wheatland, Missouri and the Lucas Oil Speedway for the final leg of the 2015 ASCS National Summer Speedweek.

After the draw, Matt found himself with the 3rd starting spot in the night’s 4th heat race. The heat race provided the chance to advance and gain some passing points. Matt did just that and charged to the front, walking away with the heat win.

The heat win advanced Covington into the night’s redraw. The redraw was not as kind to Matt, landing him the 8th starting spot for the feature.

At the drop of the green, Covington tried to break into the top-5 and run down the lead pack. Matt was not able to mount the charge he needed due to a tight race car and slipped back to tenth. With a handful of laps remaining, his car started to come back as the track began to slick off, allowing him to gain some spots as the laps dwindled down. Matt was able to make it back to the 8th position, where he started, when the checkers dropped, capping off the weekend.

“This past weekend was not as good as I would have liked, but all in all it was a solid showing for our team,” stated Covington. “We had a decent night Friday and were able to go forward in the heat and feature, but I would have liked to finish better than we did to be honest. Saturday was tough for me because anytime you draw good for the heat you want to capitalize on it. We did win the heat and was able to get in the redraw, but unfortunately we drew the dreaded 8th pill for the feature. We were just too tight early in the feature and I wasn’t able to get going until it was too late in the race. But we still need to be proud of the effort and I would just like to thank my crew and all our supporters for giving us the chance to come out here and do what we do. All we can do is keep working hard and see if we can’t get us a win, or at least a solid top-5 National finish, up north this weekend with the Washington boys. They have a tough local group up there.”
