Brian Brown - Wheatland This Week!

[i (Bill W) September 24, 2009]

Brian Brown and the SuperClean #21 racing team got three 410 shows in last week, two with the World of Outlaws, and one at Cheater’s Day at the Huset’s Speedway in South Dakota. This weekend, the team will compete at the self-proclaimed “Diamond of the Dirt Tracks” Lucas Oil Speedway near Wheatland, Missouri with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Series.

The first show with the WoO last week came on Wednesday at the Clay County Fair Speedway in Spencer. Brian was able to make an appearance at the biggest county fair in the country at the Arnold Motor Supply booth. The company also promoted the WoO event. “We had a great day with the people from Arnold Motor Supply, and representing SuperClean,” he says. “We wanted to follow up on the success we had last year there, but it didn’t work out that way. We were the sixth fastest car in hot laps, but it really went downhill from there. I thought I took the right line in qualifying on the cushion, but the faster way was off the cushion (20th quick).”

After running fifth in the heat, Brian lined up 19th for the feature before dropping out and being scored 23rd. “We actually weren’t too bad in the feature,” he says. “We were lapped right before a red, and Outlaw rules are different than most. Once you are a lap down, even if you pass the cars in front of you, you can’t move up any spots. We made a couple more laps and pulled it in with that the case.”

Saturday the WoO hit a new track, the Deer Creek Speedway near Spring Valley, Minnesota. Qualifying again put Brian behind the 8-ball, but he came from outside the heat invert to transfer to the main event. “We missed on gear a bit early on at Deer Creek,” he says. “It was a guess. We were turning the right r.p.m.’s, but we probably needed less. We just didn’t get the miles per hour. Twenty-first quick puts you in a bad situation.”

Brian started the 35-lap feature inside row eleven. He would end up 17th after dropping out. “You’re starting 21st with the Outlaws, and that is tough,” he says. “They are very good racers. The feature was a lot like Spencer in that we were lapped early. All was not lost. We learned a lot with our 410 car that we wouldn’t have by running a smaller 360 show. We can use that.”

The lessons paid off early at Huset’s on Sunday where Brian was third quick at Cheater’s night. Other than moving the front wing forward, there was no cheating going on in the Grain Valley, Missouri driver’s pit. “What we learned on Wednesday and Saturday helped us at Huset’s,” he says. “On Saturday, we were three-tenths off of (Terry) McCarl, (Sam) Hafertepe and Scott Winters. On Sunday, we were two-hundreths off of Terry’s quick time. We definitely made some progress there.”

After a strong heat race, Brian ran where he started, ninth. “It was a good race with McCarl in the heat and we were fourth,” he says. “We started the feature ninth. We gained a few early and lost a few late. I’d like to have an excuse, but we just ran ninth.”
Brian has a definite respect for the local drivers at the South Dakota 1/3 mile oval. “Those guys are tough,” he says. “It’s like when they come to Knoxville, they are on our playground. We were on theirs’ this time. Tires play different on that track. Instead of the right rear expanding, it’s the left. That’s definitely a different feel. When you get used to that, the track blows off.”

With Friday’s “Shaheen’s Blast From the Past” in Jacksonville, Illinois postponed a week, Brian will focus on Saturday’s ASCS race in Wheatland this weekend.

Brian's Q&A
Larry Hess asks: I’ve never been to the Lucas Oil Speedway. Can you describe what it’s like, and what the track shape reminds you of?
Brian answers: It has a good shape to it. One and two have a little more banking than three and four. The first night I was there, it was slick and laid rubber, and the last time I went, it was a rough ‘Cowboy Up’ service. As far as the facilities, for me, it’s in the top two in the world. It’s a premiere facility for sprint car racing, and I’m glad it’s close to home.
