Inside Line Promotions – ORRVILLE, Ohio (June 23, 2015) – Caleb Helms enters the middle of the UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions Ohio Speedweek ranked eighth in the standings.
“We’re not where we want to be,” he said. “We feel like we should be more competitive than this. We’re trying to find a little bit more, but we’ve been a lot better since we tore the car apart. We’ve been making some strides in the right direction. We’re just trying to get it fine-tuned and put the whole night together.”
Helms opened Ohio Speedweek last Friday at Attica Raceway Park in Attica, Ohio, by qualifying third quickest overall out of more than 50 competitors. He then won a heat race to lock himself into the dash, which he placed fifth in to garner the fifth starting position for the main event.
“I think we were a little tight,” he said. “It was a long, hard race and it wore me down. That was the hardest we’ve raced all week. It took a while to figure out the right line. I got better as the race went on, but I cost us some spots in doing it.”
Helms earned a 10th-place result, which was his third top 10 of the season.
The team ventured to Eldora Speedway near Rossburg, Ohio, on Saturday for Round 2 of Ohio Speedweek. Helms timed in 27th quickest and he placed fifth in a heat race to be relegated to the B Main, where a 12th-place result made him use a provisional to start last – 26th – in the feature.
“We got better for the feature and were able to pass some cars,” he said. “It’s hard in dirty air there. I got what I could get and we finished 20th.”
Helms tackled Waynesfield Raceway Park in Waynesfield, Ohio, on Sunday. He qualified 13th quickest before ending third in a heat race to lock himself into the 13th starting position in the main event.
“We were passing cars at the beginning and then the track started to slick off a little more,” he said. “I felt like I was too tight. I couldn’t get into the corners as good. I was hanging on at the end.”
Helms ended with a 16th-place finish.
Ohio Speedweek Round 4 took the team to Wayne County Speedway, where Helms qualified ninth overall on Monday. He then finished fourth in a heat race to advance into the main event, which he started 18th.
“We got closer in the right direction in getting me comfortable,” he said. “We were decent. We still need to get a little more out of it. If you look at the times the guys at the back were way slower because the air is so bad. It was pretty rough and is one of the dustiest tracks so when you’re at the back you’re at a pretty big disadvantage.”
Helms posted a 14th-place finish.
The remainder of Ohio Speedweek includes events Tuesday at Sharon Speedway in Hartford, Ohio; Wednesday at Atomic Speedway in Chillicothe, Ohio; Thursday at Fremont Speedway in Fremont, Ohio; Friday at Limaland Motorsports Park in Lima, Ohio; and Saturday at Fremont Speedway.
