Inside Line Promotions – CALIFORNIA, Mo. (June 23, 2015) – Derek Hagar powered to a pair of runner-up results last weekend in Missouri.
Hagar kicked off the competition on Saturday at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland by advancing from fourth to third place in a Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour heat race. That lined him up on the outside of the sixth row for the main event.
“We raced three and four wide with a bunch of guys for pretty much the whole race, trading slide jobs and stuff,” he said. “We were swapping slide jobs forever. It was a good run. I slid Jeff Swindell on the last lap and he got back around me for fifth.”
Hagar’s sixth-place result tied his best finish of the season with the ASCS National Tour.
He also piloted a nonwing sprint car for Jack Hockett and David Korte on Saturday night, which began when Hagar maneuvered from sixth to win a heat race to garner the third starting position in the feature.
“I took the lead probably on Lap 2 or 3 of the feature and then the tire sealed up and I lost all my forward drive,” he said. “We were a little too loose and got passed. I was trying a couple of different lines and started getting in the cushion more in turns one and two, but as soon as I got in the slick I didn’t have enough drive to get back around him.”
Hagar led a majority of the main event before posting a second-place finish.
He concluded the weekend with an ASCS Warrior Region event on Sunday at Double X Speedway, where he made his debut.
“The car was a little snug in hot laps,” he said. “I watched a couple of other cars and they were way out of shape coming out of the corners. That track has really tight corners so you have to throw it in there like a nonwing car. We didn’t make many adjustments because I thought the track would come to us and it did.”
Hagar drove from sixth to fourth place in a heat race to earn the ninth starting position for the main event.
“We were kinda snug, but I passed a couple of cars early,” he said. “I started changing my line up a bit and it started working. Toward the end I passed the guy for second and the leader was over a straightway ahead. We took the white flag and I tracked him down and pushed him across the line. One more lap and we would have won the thing.”
Hagar posted a second-place result for the second straight night and for the fourth time in the last eight races.
He is scheduled to compete this Friday at Diamond Park Speedway in Nashville, Ark., and Saturday at I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark., with the USCS Series.
