Inside Line Promotions – PETALUMA, Calif. (June 22, 2015) – Chase Johnson will return to the Shawn and Cyndi Thomas owned No. 68 sprint car for a King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series doubleheader this weekend.

The team will compete on Friday at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, Calif., for the Pombo/Sargent Classic and on Saturday at Calistoga Speedway in Calistoga, Calif., for the Wine Country Classic.

Friday will mark Johnson’s his first start at Ocean Speedway since 2013. Meanwhile, he will return to Calistoga Speedway, where Johnson won his first career World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series heat race earlier this year en route to advancing into his first career World of Outlaws A Main.

“I’m looking forward to this weekend and I’m looking forward to hopefully getting this monkey off my back, too,” Johnson said. “I haven’t been to Ocean Speedway very often. I’ve only been there a handful of times. But it’s like a sister track to Petaluma Speedway, where I have a lot of laps. I feel pretty confident going into Calistoga Speedway, especially coming off the run we had with the World of Outlaws.”

Johnson had a sour ending to last weekend in his family owned sprint car at Petaluma Speedway. He kicked off the Civil War Sprint Car Series event on Saturday by qualifying 12th quickest.

“Everything was going great,” he said. “We were going for a good night. We actually tied for 12th quickest and we broke the tiebreaker due to us before the first car out. That put us on the pole of a heat.

“I just needed to get a good start and that’s exactly what I did. I guess we had a pretty big lead. Then something in the steering broke and that ended our night. The car kept going straight and into the wall we went.”

Johnson led the first portion of his heat race before the violent crash. He was unable to continue the rest of the event.

“Everything is bent and broken,” he said. “We’ll be lucky if the motor comes out ok. Every single other piece is ready for the garbage can. It tore up a lot of things.”

SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT – Newman Freeman Racing

During the 1976 auto racing season, actor Paul Newman became interested in forming a professional auto racing team and contacted Bill Freeman from Santa Barbara. Freeman is credited as the man who introduced Newman to professional auto racing management and their company specialized in Can-Am, Indy Cars and other high performance racing automobiles.

“The reason Paul Newman got into racing was because of a guy named Bill Freeman,” Johnson said. “Bill hasn’t really been involved in racing since Paul’s death so we really appreciate his support and partnership.”
