Matt Covington and the Covington Motorsports team would come home 3rd and secure a solid top five at the ASCS Sooner region race held at Creek County Speedway on Saturday Sept 19th. It looked to be a long night after the draw and opening lap incident in the heat race. Matt would draw 50 out of 50 pills in the draw to start at the back of his heat race. Matt was able to get a good start in the heat only to be cut short as another drive ran up over the front-end, ripping the nose wing off and doing major damage to the top-wing. Matt was able to restart tail back in the heat with his wounded WESMAR/MAXIM sprinter. With a heavy race track and no nose-wing Matt was able to hustle the car to the front and drive his way into the re-draw with a 3rd place finish. The re-draw would not go as hoped and Matt would pull pill number seven to start inside row four.
Matt and the Crew would make adjustment for the feature as the track stayed tacky and fast. After a couple of opening green flag reds, Matt was able to take his row four starting spot and gain a few positions to get up to fifth by lap five. Matt would settle in and pick off the third and fourth place car by lap ten to crawl into the 3rd position. On lap eleven there would be a caution to bunch the field back up. This would set up a green flag run that would go for the next twelve laps. Matt and the top two would check-out from the field and work their way into lap traffic. Matt was able to get beside the second place car and work his way past in lapped traffic on lap 22, only to have it negated for a caution with three laps to go. As the green flag flew for the last time, Matt would would work hard to get the second place position but fall short as the checkered flag fell.
All in all it was a good night and strong 3rd place finish that helped Matt gain ground on the ASCS Sooner championship, putting him only 30 points out of the lead. The next scheduled ASCS Sooner regional race is at Cowtown Speedway on Oct 9th and 10th. Matt and the team will take the next few weekends until then to pick up a race or two within the four state area. The Covington Motorsports Team is shooting for a strong showing to gain some more ground on the Sooner Region championship. Matt will continue with the ASCS Sooner region and filling in other races when time permits. Matt is still sitting 2nd in ASCS Sooner points and hopes to close that gap in the last few races this year.
