USAC’s Silver Crown Championship cars return to the dirt July 2 as they tackle the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track for the “Sumar Classic.” The race dates back to 1995 and will feature a battle for the point lead after last Saturday’s pavement outing at Iowa Speedway.
Kody Swanson’s series lead over Aaron Pierce stands at just 14 points after Swanson’s car suffered a broken axle 40 laps into the race. Pierce held on for a fourth-place finish.
Bobby Santos of Franklin, Mass., a three-time USAC Midget winner at the Iowa oval, put his DJ Racing/Simpson Race Products Beast/Chevy into victory lane in Saturday’s “Casey’s General Stores 100.” He led the final 55 laps after passing Chris Windom on lap 46. David Byrne’s late-race pass earned him the runner-up spot ahead of Windom, followed by Pierce and Austin Nemire at the checkered flag.
Saturday’s race featured five lead changes. Pierce led the first eight laps and Windom the next 14. Jacob Wilson took over on lap 23 and Santos took the point two laps later. Windom went to the front on lap 27 but yielded to Santos for the final lead change.
Swanson won the pole for the 100-lap race at 140.581 mph. He is the defending winner of the upcoming “Sumar Classic.”
