Inside Line Promotions – ABBOTTSTOWN, Pa. (June 15, 2015) – Ryan Smith is gearing up for his first-ever attempt at the UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions Ohio Speedweek, which begins this weekend.
Smith kicks off the marquee event, which features nine races at eight tracks in nine days, this Friday at Attica Raceway Park in Attica before he makes his debut at Eldora Speedway near Rossburg, Ohio, on Saturday.
“I’m very excited,” he said. “We’re trying to get all our ducks in a row to be prepared. A couple of the tracks we’ve been to, but the rest of them will be new to me. We’re going to go guns loaded and hopefully we can time in well, which is half the battle, and race well. It will be a really good experience for me and our crew.”
Smith, who ranks fourth in the All Star championship standings, is coming off a pair of races with the UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions last weekend.
The action began on Thursday, when Smith made his debut at Canandaigua Motorsports Park in Canandaigua, N.Y., where he qualified 10th quickest before placing sixth in a heat race. That locked him into the 17th starting position for the main event.
“It was our first time there and we didn’t have the car right in time trials so it was an uphill battle,” he said. “The feature went green to checkered. We were a top-10 car and should have been in the fifth to eighth range.”
Smith rallied to post an 11th-place result, which earned him the Hard Charger Award for passing the most cars.
After Friday’s All Star race rained out at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pa., Smith closed the weekend on Saturday at Lincoln Speedway.
“We timed well, but missed it a little in the heat race,” he said.
Smith, who opened the event by qualifying eighth quickest despite going out last, placed fifth in a heat race. That lined him up on the outside of the 10th row for the main event.
“We were good and we started going forward,” he said. “I got tangled with another driver so we should have been close to the top 10, but we ended up 20th.”
Smith was just outside the top 10 when another driver collided with him with approximately 10 laps remaining. He ended with a 20th-place finish.
