Inside Line Promotions – COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (June 14, 2015) – Trey Starks had a career-best streak of 11 consecutive top-five finishes in his family owned sprint car end Saturday at Cottage Grove Speedway.

Starks was in contention to extend that streak and potentially score his 10th podium in 11 races before a mechanical problem derailed him during the main event.

“It looked like we were going to have another win or at least a podium,” he said. “As cliché as it sounds, it just wasn’t our night. It didn’t start off well. We only had me and my dad there so we were a little shorthanded. Then we broke a right rear wheel center in hot laps. It should have junked the whole car so we got real lucky. Somehow we ended up not hurting anything but the wheel.”

Starks then qualified second quickest around the quarter-mile bullring before he maneuvered from fourth to win a heat race.

“We ended up winning, but we weren’t as good as we wanted to be,” he said. “We were just off a little bit.”

That continued in the main event, which Starks started on the inside of the second row.

“I fell back to fourth until about Lap 10 and then I got back into third,” he said. “The top three were all racing there for the lead and hitting lapped traffic. It looked like we were faster than they were, but not as much as we should have. Then the motor let go in a pretty big way.”

Starks was running third when the problem occurred just prior to the midpoint of the feature. He was credited with a 12th-place result.

“We are out of 360ci motors until our main one gets back next week,” he said. “We’re not in a very good position right now in terms of equipment. We’ve been having some good luck until this weekend so maybe it was destined to even out in one night. That’s how racing goes.”

Starks will likely take this weekend off before returning to competition June 25-27 at Skagit Speedway in Alger, Wash., for the Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.
