For the second week in a row, Wayne Johnson and the #77x team made a charge on the high banks. This week, it was a drive from eighth to second at the Salina Highbanks Speedway in Salina, Oklahoma. The Lucas Oil ASCS National Series invades the Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas on Saturday to begin their 2015 Speedweek. The Oklahoma native has won six ASCS races at Devil’s Bowl.
Wayne would qualify for the feature redraw by driving from fourth to second in his heat. “We were decent there in the heat,” he says. “(Matt) Covington got a good start and slid us all going into turn one. That’s how I got back to second. I ran him down, I just couldn’t make it happen.”
The track offered for plenty of passing, and Wayne moved forward. He passed Blake Hahn for the lead, but the pass was negated by a caution. “We had a good start,” he says. “We were able to get into the lead. At that point, the caution came out for (Aaron) Reutzel who spun out. We hadn’t completed the whole lap. ASCS doesn’t use the split yellows, everyone has to make the lap to complete it. That moved us back.”
Hahn was able to hold on for the win and Wayne would checker second. “After I showed that kid where the racetrack was, he never left the bottom again,” he says. “That’s where he had to be and I couldn’t get him. We ran second.”
Saturday’s race at Devil’s Bowl begins ASCS Speedweek. Next Wednesday will see Speedweek continue in Lawton, Oklahoma, before moving on to Sapulpa, Oklahoma, Salina, Kansas and Wheatland Missouri. “I’m really looking forward to Devil’s Bowl,” says Wayne. “That’s one of the tracks I grew up on, and we’ve always been good there. Next week, Speedweek starts and we’re looking forward to getting some more races in.”
