Inside Line Promotions – CHICO, Calif. (June 9, 2015) – Chase Johnson kicked off last Saturday’s King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series event at Silver Dollar Speedway with his season-best qualifying effort.
Johnson, who was piloting the Shawn and Cyndi Thomas owned No. 68 during the 3rd annual David Tarter Memorial, timed in fifth quickest around the quarter-mile bullring to put himself in a great position for the remainder of the event.
“We started the night out really well,” he said. “When we went out we set quick time. It stayed for about half of qualifying and then some really good guys knocked us off. Fifth was our best result of the year. Unfortunately, it was one spot out of the dash, which was a bummer.”
Johnson finished fourth in a heat race to lock himself into the feature. However, the top four in qualifying did the same to advance into the dash. That lined Johnson up on the inside of the fifth row for the main event.
“The crew gave me a really good car, but the bad luck struck again,” he said. “We were running ninth or 10th and a left front stop on the torsion bar broke off, which caused us to not have any suspension on the left front. The car was an absolute handful. I just limped it around to the finish. We stayed on the lead lap, but it was so tough to hang on to.”
The incident, which happened around the midpoint of the feature, forced Johnson to drop to a 15th-place result.
“There were a lot of positives we can take out of last weekend,” he said. “Getting that good qualifying run gave me some extra confidence. It shows our speed is there and the car is there. We just need a little luck and to put it all together.”
Johnson is slated to compete this Saturday at Stockton Dirt Track in Stockton, Calif., with the King of the West.
