Inside Line Promotions – ELMA, Wash. (June 7, 2015) – Trey Starks extended his streak of top-five finishes in his family owned sprint car to 11 consecutive races last Saturday with a podium finish at Grays Harbor Raceway.
Starks placed third during the Summer Thunder Sprint Series event at the 3/8-mile oval, where he has scored a podium during all three races this season. His top-three result on Saturday also marked his ninth podium during the last 10 races.
“Our mindset has been we want to win every night,” he said. “I think finishing up front in general is expected of us, which is the way we want it. Every night if we don’t win it’s a little disappointing. I guess that’s good in the grand scheme of things.”
Starks kicked off Saturday’s event by qualifying ninth quickest.
“We just missed a little on the qualifying laps,” he said. “The first lap was ok. The second lap, which is when you have your momentum up, I messed up.”
That lined him up on the outside of the second row for a heat race, which he won. Since one of the top eight qualifiers didn’t advance through the heat races Starks made the feature redraw, but he pulled the second-highest number – seven – to start the main event on the inside of the fourth row.
“I think we were the fastest car the first half of the race,” he said. “We were up to third at the halfway point and took second shortly after. We were really good. The track was real nice. It was pretty smooth and slick and we’ve been good with the slick tracks lately. As the main event went on the track started to build a cushion. We had been rolling the middle. As the cushion got faster our line wasn’t working as well and we were a little too tight to run the cushion.”
Starks had a green-white-checkered restart to take one last shot at the win, but he ended up losing a position on the last lap to place third.
“We ended up losing the second spot coming off turn four coming to the checkered,” he said. “It sucks, but the difference between second and third isn’t that much when you’re going for the win.”
Starks is slated to race at Cottage Grove Speedway in Cottage Grove, Ore., this Saturday. He has two wins, four podiums and five top fives in five races at the quarter-mile track this season.
