Inside Line Promotions – BELLEVILLE, Kan. (June 2, 2015) – Brandon Hanks tied his career-best Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour result last Saturday at Eagle Raceway.
Hanks recorded a seventh-place finish in the David Smith Racing entry during the Hinchman Raceway Eagle Nationals at the high-banked oval in Eagle, Neb., which marked his six top 10 of this season.
“We had a real good night,” he said. “I think it could have been better. In the heat race we went forward and were catching (Johnny) Herrera pretty quickly the last couple laps. That gave me a lot of confidence for the feature. We didn’t change anything on the car, which was a mistake.”
Hanks charged from sixth to third place during a heat race to lock himself into the feature redraw. He then pulled the No. 4 to line up on the outside of the second row for the main event.
“The last couple times I’ve been there it’s been slick to the wall,” he said. “I was expecting the same thing, but the track stayed hooked up. I was tight all night and we didn’t touch it because we expected the race track to come to us. I really struggled with being really, really tight. I hung on the best I could.”
Hanks quickly maneuvered into second place and he maintained a position on the podium until the closing laps when he lost several positions to end seventh.
The team ventured to Belleville High Banks on Sunday for the inaugural Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour event at the fast track.
“The car felt really good, but we didn’t have any speed in the heat race,” he said. “The car was straight as an arrow and I had the pedal straight on the floor. Jack Dover and Brian Brown, it was like they had 50 more horsepower than I did. They left me like I was sitting still.”
Hanks dropped from the pole position of a heat race to a third-place finish, which locked him into the 14th starting position for the main event. However, the team found a bad oil leak when Hanks returned to the pits following the heat race.
“We decided to stay on the safe side so we attempted to take the green flag in the main event and pulled in,” he said. “We’re not sure what happened so we’ve got our backup engine in for this weekend.”
Hanks is slated to return to Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour competition this Saturday at Salina Highbanks Speedway in Salina, Okla. He maneuvered from 19th to an 11th-place result the last time he competed at the track.
