Jeremy Campbell wired the field in Saturday night’s 25-lap feature as the NCRA Sprint Car series invaded the 3/8-mile Dodge City Raceway Park for the first time this season.
While the Michigan native turned Wichita, KS, resident took the $2,000 NCRA winner’s share, Clay Sellard stayed perfect in IMCA Modified action with Josh Appel besting the IMCA Sport Modifieds, Jason Rogers reeling in the IMCA Stock Car win and Cody Davis surviving to win the IMCA Hobby Stock feature.
After winning his heat race, reigning NCRA co-champion Campbell gridded the feature outside the front row with Zach Blurton to his inside in his first outing aboard the Ochs Brothers No. 1x.
Campbell gunned into the lead at the outset with fellow 2014 co-champ C.J. Johnson quickly making his way into second. Johnson stayed close in the early going, but after a pair of lap nine cautions never could keep pace with the fleet Campbell that never wavered from the low line.
“The bottom was so good that I wasn’t going to leave it until somebody showed me something on the outside,” Campbell said after picking up the victory aboard the Dan’s Cycle/Scott’s Well Service No. 10c.
Aside from Johnson’s early advances, nobody ever to close enough to give Campbell reason to abandon the lower portion of the track.
“That’s the bad thing about being out there though, you never know if someone is closing in or not,” Campbell concluded.
Campbell had no worries, taking the checkered flag ten car-lengths ahead of Johnson with Blurton settling for the show position. J.D. Johnson climbed from tenth to snare fourth with Jake Martens working the upper portion of the track to move from ninth to fifth over the final portion of the race after starting tenth.
Josh Fairbank was sixth, with Jon Freeman nipping Ray Seemann at the line for seventh. Jeff Stasa recovered from a spin into turn one on a lap nine restart while running fourth to salvage ninth with Chris Morgan completing the top ten.
Aside from Martens, Luke Cranston was the only other driver to successfully navigate the high side with an impressive run around the rim from ninth to fifth on a lap ten restart before taking fourth from J.D. Johnson on the 11th lap. Cranston began to lose power soon after and pulled to the infield six laps shy of the finish.
In IMCA Modified action, Bucklin’s Clay Sellard picked off his third win in as many tries to extend his points lead.
He had to work for this one though, ultimately snaring the lead 16 rounds into the 20-lapper and surviving fuel issues to put the win away. “It started dying in the corners with a few laps to go, I’m not sure if it was out of fuel or a fuel pump problem, I don’t know that I could have done another lap or two though.”
After a rocky start to the Modified feature with three cautions before a lap was completed, Randy Wilson led the way from the front row outside ahead of Ryan Heger as Sellard worked his way forward from the ninth position.
Heger battled past Wilson for the lead on the sixth round with Sellard into third by the 11th lap and then second the next time around.
After a pair of lap 15 restarts, Heger held off Sellard briefly until the latter battled into the lead on the 16th circuit. Sellard held on over the closing rounds with Heger fending off 12th-starter Mike Petersilie for second over the final two laps. Trent Gray advanced from “B” Main action to race from 17th to fourth with 19th-starter Jimmy Brozek rounding out the top five.
In IMCA Sport Modified action, Dodge City’s Josh Appel captured his first win DCRP since the 2013 season finale.
After starting third, Appel slipped past early leader Austin Walker on the fourth round and then held off two-time and reigning track champion Jeff Kaup over the final half of the 20-lapper to become the third different Sport Mod winner in as many events.
While Appel held off Kaup, his father Mike Appel climbed from the ninth starting position to claim third with opening night winner Jeremy Sigler and Ryan Stevenson rounding out the top five.
Making just his second DCRP appearance, Selden’s Jason Rogers battled past Marlin Hogie on the fifth round and led the rest of the way in the 15-lap IMCA Stock Car feature for his first Dodge City triumph.
While Rogers led the way, Ron Hartman made his way past Hogie for second by the midway point and kept the pressure on the leader the rest of the way. Rogers kept Hartman at bay flawlessly with Hogie, Dusty Witthuhn and Brett Copeland rounding out the top five.
Bucklin’s Cody Davis survived a race of attrition to capture his second IMCA Hobby Stock feature in three tries at DCRP this season.
Davis assumed the point with just two laps to go when Reagan Sellard was unable to refire following a red flag for a hard hit between Jason Cleveland and Zach McLemore in turn four.
Davis, who had pressured Sellard from the early stages of the 15-lapper, survived the final two-lap dash to the stripe that included only himself and Norman Carr. Sellard was credited with third as only two cars reached the checkered flag.
Dodge City Raceway Park fires right back to life next Saturday night, June 6, with the URSS vs. DCRP Sprint Cars along with IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars and IMCA Hobby Stocks.
