Top 5 Top 10 Weekend for STM

A three day race weekend was cut down to only two races due to Mother Nature on Friday night when the Scott Thiel Motorsports team was supposed to race at the Oshkosh Speedzone. Fortunately, they were able to race the next two events which started Saturday night at Cedar Lake Speedway where Scotty pulled off his career best qualifying effort of second quick and found his first top five finish in the A-main in 2015. He followed that up Sunday at Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, WI with a top 10 finish in the A-main after facing some issues early on in the night.

Cooler than normal temperatures set in at Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond, WI on Saturday night as the team made the five hour haul north. Scotty drew a 6 pill which placed him to be the third car out for time trials. He laid down a very solid lap that placed him second quick overall out the 26 cars in attendance and a career best qualifying effort. That placed Scotty to start sixth in the heat race event. After taking the green flag for the ten lap event, Scotty charged his way forward and battled his way into the third spot in the first few laps. He began to gain momentum on the lead cars and slid his way into second place on the final lap. It was a solid run and he would make the invert for the 30 lap A-main event.

The invert number was drawn and it would place Scotty to start fifth in the main event. The field pushed off and prepared for the 30 Lap, $3,000 to win event. They took the green out of turn four and the field charged into turn one. Scotty worked the low line and would charge his way into second place in the first lap. He maintained his distance with the leader as lap traffic quickly approached. A few laps later, Scotty was on the tail of the leader as the track ahead was filled with lapped cars. A red flag came out for a car flipping in turn one. After the restart, Scotty charged his way on the bottom of turn one. He came out side by side with the leader but had to settle into the second spot going into turn three. A few laps later another red flag came out. On the restart, Scotty did the same thing and inched ahead down the back stretch. He was unable to capitalize on the position and settled yet again in second. A caution flag came out quickly after and reset the field again. On this restart, Scotty spun the tires and did not get a good launch. He fell back to fourth after one lap and struggled with the handling of the car. He moved his way to the top side of the track and battled back for position. Only a few laps remained and he managed to pull closer to the top three cars but was unable to move up in position as the checkered flag flew and would settle for a fourth place finish. “We had a brand new car out here tonight. We were able to get it dialed in early on as we qualified well and had a good heat race run. I thought we had something in the main as we had the shot at the lead a few times but the bottom was tough tonight. The momentum up top kept those cars ahead. I messed up on the last restart and I think sealed over my tires as we fell straight back to fourth. I was able to hang on to it however and pulled off a top five. After the luck we have been having, it actually feels pretty good” mentioned Thiel after the event.

A 3.5 hour trek lead the team down to Sun Prairie, WI on Sunday to the Angell Park Speedway. Scotty drew a 15 pill which set him to be the eighth car out for qualifying. He hit a big rut in turn three but managed to keep his speed up and held on to an eighth place qualifying run. That placed him to start fourth in the heat race event. After the green flag flew to start the heat race off, Scotty charged the top side and drove into the third position. He was all over the leaders but was unable to make the pass for position. A red flag flew and as Scotty stopped on the track he was notified that his left rear tire was very low on air. He pushed back off and tried to build air back into the tire but wasn’t able to do so and needed to pull into the work area. The crew changed the tire quickly and was able to get Scotty back out on the track. After restarting in the eighth spot, he drove back around the high side and charged into the sixth position. A caution came out with only one lap to go and a green, white, checkered finish was presented. Scotty’s car stumbled badly on the restart and he fell back one position and was unable to regain his ground after and would have to settle for a seventh place finish. After pulling off the race track it was discovered that Thiel ran out of fuel on the last restart which caused the stumble on the restart. He was forced to come through the B-main and would be lined up in the second position. After going green, Scotty settled into the second position and would hold that spot for all 12 laps and would receive his qualifying time back which set him to start in the 12th position for the nights 30 lap A-main event. Scotty worked his way up to the top ten early on in the A-main event as he was running the top side of the track. A few red flags came out during the first half of the event and the field maintained their positions. On the restart after the half way point of the main, Scotty began to work the low line of the track, He moved his way up to the seventh spot and held that ground until a caution came out with only seven laps to go. The field returned back to green flag action and Scotty went to the bottom side in turn one. Lap traffic became a huge factor and Scotty lost a few spots after trying to move around the lapped cars. He charged his way back to the high side of the track and regained a couple positions and would cross the finish line in the eighth spot. “We tried a few things tonight and it worked out early on for a little while. Qualified eighth which was respectable but having that flat tire in the heat hurt our momentum we started with. We had a good run in the B and with our time coming back we started 12th. If I would have finished where I was in the heat race before the flat tire we would have made the invert but 12th starting spot wasn’t too bad. The track was pretty tricky tonight as that cushion played a big factor. Our car was pretty good on the top and bottom. It was an alright run for us but I wish we could have got around the lap cars a bit better but a top ten run isn’t too bad. Overall it was a pretty good weekend.”

Torsion Bar Rate:
Torsion bar testing has been around as long as the bar has. There are many different ways to test bars, but they all have the same goal.... to compare one bar to another and give the results in a numerical value (PSI, FORCE POUNDS, RATE). This is good, but can be hard to understand. We simplify this process. The numbering system we use is standard to the torsion bar industries. During our test sessions, data is collected and stored in our software, which then calculates it to a torsion bar size that everyone can understand. We have found 1025 bars that test between a 1012 and a 1036 bar. Our test services take away the guesswork. We provide you with a TORSION BAR RATE. Check out www.torsionbarrate.com for more info!
