Inside Line Promotions – COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (May 26, 2015) – Trey Starks added a pair of top-four finishes last weekend to extend his streak of top fives to eight straight races in his family owned sprint car.
“We have a car that can win every night,” he said. “That’s great to know and it gives you a lot of confidence. We haven’t been changing much on the car so I know what it’s going to do on the track. We’re capitalizing on every opportunity.”
Starks opened last weekend’s Western Sprint Tour doubleheader on Friday at Southern Oregon Speedway in White City, Ore., by qualifying second quickest. He then advanced from sixth to third place in a heat race before finishing third in the dash.
“We started on the bottom groove during the dash and it was really greasy still,” he said. “The top had started to tack up so Jared Peterson got a lot better start and beat us into the first corner. We were gaining on him and I should have thought about the start for the main event, but I was going for the win. I tried a slider and it just came up short. Roger (Crockett) got by us so we ended up starting third in the main.”
Starks maintained third place throughout the feature on the one-lane track to earn his best career result at Southern Oregon Speedway. It also marked the sixth consecutive podium finish during 360ci competition for Starks.
“There wasn’t a ton of passing,” he said. “Lapped traffic got sketchy at times because there was only one lane. I had to make sure I was behind Peterson at all times so when he moved a lapped car I could sneak in behind him. We ended up with another podium.”
The weekend wrapped up on Sunday at Cottage Grove Speedway, where Starks qualified 11th quickest before he powered from fourth to win a heat race. That earned him enough points to advance into the dash for the second straight night and after maneuvering from third to the win, Starks garnered the pole position for the feature.
“We should have won the main event to be honest,” he said. “Either a bleeder stuck or something happened. We ended up having a tire go way down before the start. I should have probably pulled in because it was basically flat. I just to spin it and couldn’t really get it to air up.”
Starks dropped to fourth on the opening lap before he built pressure in the right rear tire. He maintained that position for the remainder of the race, despite a late restart that allowed air to leak out of the tire again.
“We had a red with about eight laps to go and it went down again,” he said. “I spent that last eight laps trying to get the tire warmed up and pumped up again and it never really came in. it was a handful. I tried to hold on to as many spots as I could.”
Starks will take his top-five streak into the Marvin Smith Memorial this Friday and Saturday at Cottage Grove Speedway.
