Inside Line Promotions – BYRAM, Miss. (May 26, 2015) – Brandon Hanks is thrilled thinking about the future of his new opportunity driving for David Smith Racing.
Hanks recorded a pair of top 10s during his debut with the team and its J-R1 chassis last weekend, including a fifth-place result on Saturday at Jackson Motor Speedway.
“For a new team it was really good,” he said. “I think once we get a few races under us in this J-R1 we’re going to be really fast. I think we’re going to win some races.”
The weekend opened on Friday at Timberline Speedway in Corley, Texas, with Hanks maneuvering from seventh to fourth place during an ASCS Red River Region heat race. That lined him up on the inside of the seventh row for the main event.
“In the feature we were ok,” he said. “We weren’t that great. We were a mid-pack car, but leaving with a top 10 in a brand new car was good. I love this J-R1. It took me a little to get used to it because it drives so different.”
Hanks battled for a top 10 throughout the feature before ending 10th.
Hanks and the team ventured to Jackson Motor Speedway to compete at the USCS Mid South Speedweek opener after Saturday’s ASCS Red River Region event rained out.
Hanks advanced from sixth to third place in a heat race, which garnered the fourth starting position for the main event.
“We ran third for a long time,” he said. “We were up against the fence on the cushion. Whenever we started moving down the track the rubber was kind of patchy. I was too free down there and that’s when I lost a couple of spots.”
Hanks ended with a fifth-place result, which marked his fourth top five of the season.
“We wanted more seat time in that J-R1,” he said. “We still learned a few things about the car. We’ll have to run this car a little tighter than any car I’ve run. I’m excited about the future.”
Hanks is scheduled to compete with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour this Saturday at Eagle Raceway in Eagle, Neb., for the Hinchman Racewear Eagle Nationals and Sunday at Belleville High Banks in Belleville, Kan.
